Amen. . Let’s talk about #ocd and let’s be real. People don’t get it. Period. . You have no idea how many times people will say to me when they hear my daughter suffers from ocd, you must love how she keeps everything so clean. Uh, no. She keeps nothing clean, because IT ISN’T just about that.... . People with ocd suffer tremendously with unexplainable intrusive thoughts. They attach value and outcome to compulsions or obsessions. . Here’s an example to understand: if my daughter doesn’t flip her pillow 5 times before bed she will never sleep and her dog will be hit by a car. It’s a real fear for her and so just about every night we count the pillow flips. Oh the occasional night where she doesn’t flip her pillow she is often awake long past bedtime. . That is just one of her compulsions. She also compulsively brushes her hair, changes clothes, works through a bed time routine. . Education matters especially when it comes to mental illnesses that society has decided to throw into common expressions or memes. . If you suffer from ocd what is one of your obsessions or compulsions? . . . #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthadvocate #mentalhealthsupport #ocdawareness #ocdrecovery #ocdproblems #kidswithocd #childhoodmentalhealth #childhoodmentalhealthmatters #anxiety #intrusivethoughts See more

You’d think putting a desk space together would take little to no time. Grab a table and a chair and voila! In fact, this workplace right here has taken my eldest, who manages #generalizedanxietydisorder #ocd and #adhd two to three months to create. . This space means the world to her, and she has been consumed with perfecting it for a long time. Once she knew we were moving and that her new school would be hybrid with part-time in-person lessons and part-time virtual, she s...et off to create a desk space that felt comfy. The hard part was that she had created a space that couldn’t possibly exist because what she wanted wasn’t available. . It took some convincing and some time for her to agree to this desk, and this chair. It wasn’t what she had in her mind, but it was something we could readily buy. . For her, this is her life dealing with her mental health issues. She is consumed by things, spaces and environments are her big ones, and when those can’t work she spirals with all sorts of intrusive thoughts either related or unrelated to the issue. This space became important because she tied her academic success to it. If it didn’t come out how she had planned or dreamed she would fail Grade 5, get sick with covid, one of us would be sick, etc... . So how is she sitting there today ready for her first virtual day of school?! We listened and allowed her to purchase whatever she needed or wanted for her room in general (within reason). We let her create a space that she felt good about, even if she didn’t get the desk that she had imagined in her mind or the chair, she at least had a room that made her feel good. Now it feels so good, she never wants to leave . How do you help your child work through their anxieties or how do you help yourself? What are your biggest triggers? Let me know See more

Seriously ?! Every. Single. Time. . I would say most people that hear ADHD as a diagnosis just assume that the child or adult lacks focus and can behaviour issues. And, while that is true, that barely scratches the surface. . This is a prime example of how #adhd affects my eldest’s ability with computation. Numbers for her are tricky and anything to do with numbers, so that means mathematics but also time (like literal time). It can make working with her on memorizing her m...ultiplication tables a challenge. She always seem to get to the correct answer, but she literally starts everything with, well if 6 x 7 is 42 then.... . . . #adhdlife #adhdawareness #adhdproblems #adhdmemes #adhdparenting #adhdgirls #adhdgirl #adhdsupport #adhdbrain #adhdkids #mentalhealthkids #mentalhealth #mentalhealthforkids #momlife #mathishard #kidswithadhd #kidswithanxiety #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #understandingadhd #specialneeds #specialneedsmom See more

There is so much truth behind this list and this isn’t even the end of it. . The majority of people believe that ADHD is the inability to focus or complete a task. It’s often tied to academic or work related projects and is assumed to be a learning disability. . It is in fact that plus so very much more. ADHD is a neurological disorder. The brain is actually wired differently for ADHDers.... . Over the last couple of years I have been compiling in my head a list of things that I would have never thought to be associated or caused by #adhd. As a teacher I had my own ideas of what this disorder was and it didn’t include most of what you see above. . It really is true that my eldest daughter’s complete inability to read and/or understand time and my youngest’s inability to brush her teeth or get dressed on a daily basis by herself stem from the same disorder. . What would you add to the list?! Let me know below. I’d love to hear. . . . #adhdawareness #adhdproblems #adhdparenting #adhdsupport #adhdkids #adhdbrain #adhdlife #adhdtips #adhdexplained #mentalhealthkids #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #momlife #family #specialneeds See more

Truth . Special needs refers to an individual who requires additional support for a mental, physical or psychological disability. This can range from learning disabilities, cerebral palsy and down syndrome, dyslexia and dyspraxia, autism and ADHD, to emotional disturbances. . The term itself is controversial with some people using it and others preferring to use alternative terms such as additional support.... . As a mom and as part of a parenting team with my husband, we use the term for our daughters. Both of them have #adhd and the youngest also suffers from and manages #emotionaldysregulation. . You wouldn’t believe how many opinions about referring to my children as special needs we get. Everyone and their dog has an opinion! I usually hear comments such as they are just kids who right now might need more support or all kids go through that, it’s a phase, would we really refer to them as special needs? I want to be real clear, what my children experience on a daily basis, that is entirely out of their control, is not a developmental phase and until you have lived in my shoes as their mom 24/7 you have no idea. . When it comes to parenting them I don’t have a magic wand (many days I wish I did) and everyday looks different. What might have worked last week to support their needs doesn’t work this week. We are constantly shifting our approaches, our routines as a family and our lives to help them be the best version of themselves. The reason we do this is that everyday is different. Some days they both require additional support and some days it all flows for them and we don’t need to put in the extra work. Those are the days that I cherish for them, because those are the days that make them feel that all of this work is worth it. . This is all to say please don’t judge other parents and their methods or their momentary madness (it happens to the best of us) we are all just trying to do what is best for our kids and have their best intentions at heart See more

It can be overwhelmingly frustrating to find information on ADHD in girls and supports or resources specifically for them.
