Although residents over the age of 60 make up just over one-quarter of our population, they accounted for 96% of COVID-19 deaths between Jan. 1 and Sept. 1, according to statistics from the BC Centre for Disease Control. These numbers clearly demonstrate the magnified risks our senior citizens have faced during this pandemic. However, the transmission of COVID-19 isn’t the only effect this pandemic has had on our elderly population. Less visits and face time with family and friends may mean less help for our seniors. November 12, 2020 marks the eleventh annual World Pneumonia Day. As paramedics, we see the serious effects this respiratory infection can have on our patients - particularly in children under the age of 2 and adults over 65. So what exactly is pneumonia? It is a respiratory infection that causes inflammation in the air sacs of the lungs. It can affect one or both lungs, causing the air sacs to fill with fluid or pus which affects our ability to breath and exchange oxygen. Pn...eumonia can be caused by viruses, bacteria or even fungi. Some common symptoms of pneumonia are: -fever (including chills and sweating) -shortness of breath (especially with exertion) -productive cough (or dry cough in early stages) -chest pain -fatigue If you suspect you or your loved one may have pneumonia, seek out a healthcare professional. If you are unsure whether you need medical attention, you can call HealthLinkBC at 811 and discuss your symptoms with a trained nurse. If you are experiencing a medical emergency like shortness of breath, decreased level of consciousness or chest pain call 911 and ask for paramedics.

On the frontlines of a pandemic and epidemic, paramedics are relying on each other and the promise of Covid-19 vaccine to get through. "Paramedics are not only going to work with the fear of bringing home the virus, they're also dealing with a "never-ending" onslaught of overdose calls due to the concurrent opioid crisis."

November 11th marks an important day in our country. On Remembrance Day we celebrate, honour and pay tribute to those who have served and those who continue to serve our country. We acknowledge the incredible sacrifices made to ensure our freedom and safety. To those who made the ultimate sacrifice and never came home, and to those who came home but were never the same we give thanks and pay our respects. Much like everything this year, the pandemic has required us to change... the way we observe Remembrance Day. As important as it is for us to pay our respects on this day, it is equally as important that we do our part to reduce the transmission of Covid-19. We will not be able to participate in ceremonies, parades and marches in the manner we are accustomed to on Remembrance Day. However, we encourage each and every one of you to share in a moment of silence at 11:00 am wherever you are. Our Ceremonial Unit - Ambulance Paramedics of BC created a virtual Remembrance Day ceremony, and we invite you to watch our video and join us in honouring those who have served or who are currently serving in the Canadian Armed Forces at home and deployed abroad. We are forever indebted and truly humbled by the sacrifices made on behalf of our country. Lest we forget.
