Nanook School/Apex District Education Authority 16.10.2021

School is reopening on Monday, water is being delivered to schools as we speak, Sunday afternoon. They are delivering large 4L bottles. We will have cups available for students, but if you prefer (we strongly advise), send a refillable water bottle with your student(s) so they can refill as much as they need without the danger of spillage. We can also send them home with drinkable water (in their refillable water bottle) at the end of the day to help with accessibility to drinkable water at home. You can always contact me directly at 222-6777 if you have any questions or concerns.

We have just received this message from the DEA support office/QSO: School will be reopening on Monday as water supplies will be delivered to schools today (Friday). See message below:... "From: DEA_support Sent: Thursday, October 14, 2021, 6:54 p.m. Subject: INFO - Update on Schools and the Iqaluit Water Situation We are eager to reopen our schools as quickly as possible so that students can return to in-class learning. The great news is despite the challenges we are facing, the Department of Education, working with the Department of Community and Government Services (CGS), has secured sufficient drinking water for Iqaluit and Apex schools. As a result, we will be reopening Iqaluit and Apex schools on Monday, October 18, 2021. We will share the water distribution plan with Apex DEA, Iqaluit DEA, the CSFN, and the CNDEA tomorrow. The Department of Education will continue to work with the City of Iqaluit and other Government of Nunavut departments and will keep you informed as we support your schools. Nanook will be closed Wednesday October 13th all day due to the water issue in the city. further information will follow as soon as we get more information from the city and the department of education. Please follow the public health's water use advisory information and stay safe: "Due to the possibility of petroleum hydrocarbons at the Iqaluit water treatment plant, the Department of Health is advising Iqalummiut not to consume tap water for drinking or cooking, until furt...her notice. This includes boiled water, filtered water through commercially sold filters such as Brita filters and filtered water through reverse osmosis systems. Pregnant women, newborns and infants should not take baths or be bathed in tap water. Do not use tap water to mix infant formula. The tap water may still be used for the following purposes: Laundry. Cleaning. Showers (avoid swallowing water). Previous test results found that the risk of contamination at the time was low and that the water was safe to drink. Observations at the Iqaluit water treatment plant today found evidence of potential hydrocarbons contamination." See more
