Today we want to give a special shout out to Williams Communication Services for donating walkie talkies to the Emergency Department at Ajax Pickering Hospital. These devices are very helpful for the medical team to communicate with their patients who are in the unit's isolation rooms without having to gown up each time.

Long-time Foundation volunteer Kathy has been busy bagging & boxing up over 200 blankets in preparation for Christmas. It has become one of our traditions to make sure that every patient who is in the Ajax Pickering Hospital on December 25th receives a new blanket knitted by a member of the community. These colourful & warm blankets provide a sense of comfort & home, which is even more important during the holiday season.

For the last five years, the Ajax Pickering Hospital Auxiliary have been partners with Delta Bingo and Gaming (Pickering) - including volunteering at multiple shifts each week. And in just the last 24 months, this relationship has enabled the Auxiliary to fund over $70,000 of equipment for our hospital! That list of equipment includes: a Bladder scanner; a blanket warming cabinet; a Fluid/blood infuser; an Eternal syringe for a paediatric smart pump; syringe pumps for the OR; and more syringe pumps. These items are used by staff throughout the hospital to help care for every patient who comes through our doors. Without this continued partnership with Pickering Delta Bingo none of these equipment purchases would have been possible.

ICU Manager Tania & RN Parsia were overwhelmed when Vic & Krista from Walker Head Lawyers arrived this week with boxes of snacks for the ICU staff. To be mindful of her own staff's health & wellness as they continue to work hard caring for their patients during the pandemic, Tania has created a "Take 10" room on the unit for staff to have a break in a peaceful space. The small room is outfitted with comfy seating, books on stress management, peer support and Lifespeak resources as well as a white noise/sound machine. And now, individually wrapped snacks because sometimes a piece of chocolate can make the world a better place!

Congratulations to our Foundation Board member JIM VANDUSEN of VanDusen Chevrolet Buick GMC for being named the 2020 BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR by the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade. Jim is a tremendous leader, as a business owner, volunteer & philanthropist, and is incredibly deserving of this award. By donating a number of cars to the Ajax Pickering Hospital Foundation for an annual raffle, he enables us to raise important funds to purchase new pieces of equipment. And at ...the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, Jim also spearheaded a lawn sign campaign to raise emergency funds for the hospital. As well as being a Foundation Board member since 2015, Jim was a founding cabinet member for The Shoulder Centre; an innovative project to transform the way patients with injury to their shoulders are treated locally and throughout the province.

You probably recognize Shiv Bansal (Shiv Bansal Team) as he's a popular realtor in the Durham community. To the Ajax Pickering Hospital Foundation he is a dedicated volunteer, an energetic supporter and generous donor. And now, he is also the winner of the 2020 Howard Sokolowski Award. Each year we acknowledge an outstanding individual’s contributions through this Award. The Howard Sokolowski Award was created to recognize an individual, group or company in the business co...mmunity that has devoted their time, shared their network of contacts and committed their financial resources to benefit the Ajax Pickering Hospital. Shiv became a member of the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation’s board of directors in 2012 and was quite possibly the first person to ask to stay as a member of the Ajax Pickering Hospital Foundation Board of Directors in 2016. Shiv truly believes that ‘giving back’ to our local communities is an obligation on the part of businesses and enjoys striving to make our communities better every day. As well as being a generous donor personally, he also is an enthusiastic champion of ours amongst his friends and colleagues, says Tracy Paterson, CEO of the Ajax Pickering Hospital Foundation. At the beginning of Covid-19, Shiv energetically organized contributions of PPE for staff, took part in parades at the Ajax Pickering Hospital and displayed signage all in support of the staff. Shiv and his wife have been donors for two decades and have been heartfelt contributors to many compassionate causes. They have funded the purchase of entertainment systems for children in the Emergency Department and for a number of years been matching-grant donors for National Philanthropy Day. This support allows the Foundation to leverage their gift by encouraging gifts from others. Shiv is a fine example of philanthropic leadership in Durham Region. Due to pandemic precautions, this year’s award was virtually presented to Shiv on September 16th in front of his fellow Foundation Board of Directors. Congratulations Shiv!

For the third year in a row, the Foundation is putting together gift parcels for clients who are supported by the Assertive Community Treatment Team. ... Today is an exciting day for all of us. After months of planning, Durham Mental Health Services officially joins the Lakeridge Health family! Working together, DMHS and Lakeridge Health will have the ability to better coordinate services in both community and acute care settings, facilitate smoother transitions and faster connections to appropriate services and create a supportive continuum of care for clients. Work has been underway between our two teams to facilitate ou...r voluntary integration since it received provincial endorsement in mid-August. Today the integration is official. This does not mean the work stops as efforts will continue in earnest as both DMHS and Lakeridge Health teams work together to identify and address existing gaps, eliminate unnecessary silos and develop processes and care pathways to improve care, support and services. We are so proud to be leading the way toward an integrated, regional approach to community mental health and addictions service delivery. This is an exciting new chapter for community mental health and addictions services in Durham Region. As you can imagine, having your newborn baby in the NICU for any amount of time is stressful. Caitlyn's first baby was there for four days, but she remembers how amazing the staff were as they supported her and her husband. That little baby weighed under 5lbs, so none of the clothes Caitlyn had bought were anywhere close to fitting him! Here is Caitlyn and, now, her big boy when they recently came by Ajax Pickering Hospital to donate some preemie clothes & hats.... Thank you for giving back to our future patients :)

Yesterday, staff at Ajax Pickering Hospital got a sweet treat! Thanks to Girl Guides of Canada & Compass Group Canada, staff took home a yummy box of Girl Guide cookies that were donated to all the hospitals of Lakeridge Health as part of their national #cookiescommunitycare campaign. "We bring you cookies as a token of the communities' heartfelt gratitude to our healthcare heroes."

Four months ago, we did not even know if we would even be able to hold the tournament. She's SHRIMPLY THE BEST! And Melissa really is, and even more so because she's celebrating working at Ajax Pickering Hospital for *30 years*! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! As a registered dietitian, she can be found in a lot of different places throughout our hospital, but for the past few years she's been manning the Shrimp Hole at the Mayors' Charity Golf Classic.

In its 25 year history, the MAYORS' CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC has helped raise funds for lots of different equipment and projects at Lakeridge Health Ajax and Pickering. In 2008, Mayor Dave Ryan (Pickering) takes a swing on the building site that was the big redevelopment project that renovated a lot of the hospital and added the new North tower and emergency department.
