Unlike COVID-19 this story is not entirely real: Everyone knew that the day could end in terrible tragedy. There had been a discussion about whether or not chil...dren should be allowed to watch, but in the end, school was dismissed. The mayor asked that all children under the age of fourteen be accompanied by their parents. After a pancake breakfast, put on by local church groups, crowds gathered in fields that provided the best view. The engine of the Harley was idling in the distance. The sound bounced across the hay fields. A hush came over the crowd. Suddenly the calm was broken. They’ll never do it! someone shouted. But no one in the crowd heard the warning. At that very moment the motorcycle revved up to full throttle and roared down the dirt path. Everyone held their breath. Suddenly the crowd broke into applause. They did it! They did it!’ everyone shouted as they ran toward the bike to congratulate the two riders. Wow! Amazing! Never seen nothin’ like that! But at least one in the crowd was not impressed. That’s nothing, he scoffed, You should see them dance. Nevertheless the celebration continued into the evening. As the sun was setting, warm light from a bonfire on the beach washed over the happy crowd. The evening was topped off with a feast of potato salad and roasted goat. The mayor vowed to erect signs commemorating the event on all roads leading into town. See more
