We've been hearing a lot about a potential COVID-19 vaccine and one great free resource that we'd like to share is the CANImmunize app. You're probably familiar with the yellow immunization cards that tend to get lost with a lot of other documents. Or forgetting to bring your immunization card to your medical appointment. With the CANImmunize app, you can track all the vaccines you receive such as all routine vaccines, the annual flu shot, travel vaccines, etc. This may be especially helpful with an upcoming COVID-19 vaccine as we've been hearing it would be 2-doses so having reminders to receive the second dose is important. It also tells you if you're all up-to-date and any outstanding vaccines that would be recommended. You can also set up other family members as well. #kwawesome #wrawesome #dtklove #uptownwaterloo

Warfarin (also known as Coumadin) is a blood thinner that helps treat blood clots and also prevents against stroke for some people who might be at risk. Those taking warfarin need to frequently go for a blood test called an INR test to make sure blood levels are within a specific range. With the current COVID-19 pandemic, we've heard some patients skipping the necessary blood work since they don't want to go to a lab and put themselves at risk. One option is getting your INR checked at the pharmacy. We use a device called CoaguChek that provides an instant result. It's a fingerpoke test that uses less blood for testing compared to going to the lab. There's no line ups, appointments are quick, and we follow strict sanitization protocols to keep you safe. Contact us to find out more! #kwawesome #wrawesome #dtklove #uptownwaterloo

You may not know this but most flu vaccines are made in chicken eggs! A common misconception is that it should be avoided if you have an egg allergy. The amount of egg protein in the flu shot is so low that it would be unlikely to cause an allergy. Check out our blog to find out more interesting facts about the flu shot! https://buff.ly/2FZWwfU We continue to receive a small supply of flu shots and have been giving them to those that have contacted us. If you would like to be added to our wait list, text or call us at 519-954-1055. #kwawesome #wrawesome #dtklove #uptownwaterloo

Some soaps that you will purchase specifically say antibacterial, is this really different from other hand soaps? There is actually no evidence that they will do a better job. Proper handwashing is more important than the type of soap you use. Make sure you lather and scrub your palms, back of hands, in between fingers and under your nails and count for at least 20 SECONDS then rinse. Dry your hands with a clean towel and if in a public restroom, try to turn off the tap with a paper towel. #Kwawesome #Wrawesome #dtklove #waterlooregion #handwash #soaps #uptownwaterloo #coronavirus

Our next health topic is pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis. This is very common and can be caused by viruses (most common), bacteria, allergies, or even chemicals/products that can irritate the eye. Our post today is focused on the contagious forms which are caused by bacteria and viruses. It’s important to determine the type of pink eye as this will change how it is treated. In some cases when symptoms are mild it is ok to wait, and use compresses to see if it will clea...r up on it’s own. In other cases it’s important to see a doctor right away. Washing your hands regularly can help prevent the spread, or becoming infected with pink eye. #uptownwaterloo #dtkitchener #dtklove #kwawesome #wrawesome #519 #pinkeye #backtoschool #apothecarepharmacy #kitchener #Waterloo @ Waterloo, Ontario

With kids back in school we thought we would address some of the more common infections associated with kids. Over the next couple of weeks we will highlight a different topic, this week is head lice. We see our fair share of head lice in the pharmacy, in fact on multiple occasions we have been brought lice in jars to identify! After treating lice empty egg casings will often be attached to the hair. These do not pose a risk, but a tip to remove them is to rub vinegar in ...the hair (this loosens them) and then a metal nit comb to remove them. Have you had to deal with lice in the past, have you had products that did or didn’t work for you in the past? #uptownwaterloo #dtkitchener #dtklove #kwawesome #wrawesome #519 #lice #backtoschool #apothecarepharmacy #kitchener #waterlooregion @ Kitchener, Ontario

Choosing a blood sugar meter these days can be overwhelming, there are a multitude of meters on the market, so how do you choose what is best for you? This is a quick (and by no means exhaustive!) comparison of the new Freestyle Libre meter vs. traditional meters. The new Libre is a Flash CGM meter which means 2 things, it is continuously testing your blood sugar (every minute) and you don’t have to prick your finger, instead a filament in a sensor (which is replaced every ...14 days) continuously measures blood sugar and can be read wirelessly by a meter or your iPhone. (You still have to do a finger prick test if you are having a low blood sugar, your numbers are changing rapidly, or your symptoms don’t match your meter results.) If you have questions about testing your blood sugar, or wondering if you have to do it at all, get in touch today! 519-954-1055 @ Kitchener, Ontario

As pharmacists we often get questions about antidepressants, from dealing with side effects to drug interactions and combining antidepressants. If you have questions make sure you reach out to a healthcare provider you trust. Here are 3 tips about antidepressants. 1. Most antidepressants will take around 2-4 weeks to take effect, when treating anxiety it can take up to 8 weeks.... 2. Antidepressants can cause discontinuation symptoms if you stop them suddenly, this can make you feel sick to your stomach, dizzy, and cause trouble sleeping as well. 3. Over the counter drugs can interact with antidepressants, always check with your pharmacist, doctor or care provider before trying new products to make sure they are safe to combine. #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthquotes #kwawesome #wrawesome #kitchener #kitchenerwaterloo #pam2019
