Appeal’s Volume 25 Editorial Board would like to send out congratulations to Volume 24 author Lee-Ann Conrod! Lee-Ann’s article, Smart Devices in Criminal Investigations: How Section 8 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms Can Better Protect Privacy in the Search of Technology and Seizure of Information, recently won the inaugural Martin Felsky Award. The prize, presented earlier this month by CanLII, celebrates excellence in Canadian open legal commentary on the ...subjects of legal research and legal technology. According to CanLII: Lee-Ann impressed the jury with her unparalleled ability to summarize advanced research efforts and her practical proposals for a new approach to address privacy protection for a wide-range of emerging technologies. Congratulations, Lee-Ann (and the entire Volume 24 editorial team)! You can read the full announcement, as well as Lee-Ann's article, in the link below.

Ryan Nicolson is currently working on a master’s in political science and law at #UVic "This past March, Ryan Nicolson hosted a potlatch in Alert Bay. At one time, that would have put him at risk of arrest... This spring, however, the ceremony held in the community’s big house went as planned... For Mr. Nicolson, the potlatch, his first as host, was a personal milestone. It can also be seen as part of an evolution in Canada, in which indigenous laws and traditions are g...etting increased attention from scholars, indigenous activists, environmentalists and others interested in how such laws evolved and how they are, or could be, used today." "At the University of Victoria, that attention extends to a program the university says is the first of its kind in Canada and unique globally: a joint degree in Canadian common law and indigenous law. The proposal, in the works for about a decade, was inspired in part by Montreal’s McGill University, which offers a joint degree in civil law, used in Quebec, and common law, used in the rest of the country." http://www.theglobeandmail.com//uvic-prop/article33084464/

"If anyone could speak about the barriers women have overcome in the legal profession, you’d think it might be Constance Isherwood...She was called to the bar 65 years ago, before women had passed such milestones as being appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada or winning legal protection from discrimination at work... When she entered law school in 1948, Isherwood was one of only eight women in a class of 208." "Isherwood said it’s been a joy to watch more women enter the... profession." "Gillian Calder, associate dean of the University of Victoria’s faculty of law, descibed Isherwood as a force of nature. Constance Isherwood is a spectacular woman. But she’s very much anomalous in a profession in which the number of women running their own law firms and holding partnership positions is still lower than men." http://www.timescolonist.com/how-96-year-old-lawyer-constan
