It has been a tough first week of a brand new year and a hard one to rally on New Year productivity! A new year usually brings with it a feeling of a clean slate yet so far 2021 feels like the same old one that no matter how much I erase it it still looks marked up AF. Having said that I am also a big believer in hope and a champion for positive change - especially when it comes to our money stories. I realize that like my feed yours is probably being bombarded right now wit...h New Year's resolutions and the stats on how often they fail (it is 80% BTW) but the show must go on and I love traditions. Do you have half-squeezed lemons? Last Saturday Zofia and I tackled cleaning out our fridge. I am not kidding when I tell you we had condiments from the last decade festering in there! We also must have thrown out no less than 5 half squeezed lemons. This naturally got me thinking about assets in our businesses! Humor me here. How often do we as entrepreneurs acquire or create new assets (lemons) like capital expenditures (equipment) or IP (fancy talk for course creation) and... not fully squeeze all the juice out of them before we move along to the next one. There is an accounting term for this it is called Return on Assets it is one of the key performance indicators of healthy profit. Profit creates stability in our organizations. We need to squeeze out every last drop of profit from our assets before we acquire more. Here's to making sweet Profit lemonade in 2021!

On the Importance of the Office Dog Meet Mango aka Mr. Handsome. Mango grew up on the shop floor of our family owned business. For over 40 years the business had a shop dog sometimes two or three. It was part of the culture. We used to have customers call and ask, Is Mango in today?’ If it was his day off they would wait until he was back in to visit us. Once a customer had a PTSD attack at the shop and Mango sought him out and helped him through it. The customer called us a...nd said, Your dog saved my life today. Mango has touched many of lives through his kind and gentle manner. Patrons used to call him the King of Quinpool. But it is not only customers that benefit from an office dog it is the owners and staff as well. As a small business life does not always go as planned. Customers aren’t always kind. On the darkest of days having a trusted friend at work who loves you unconditionally is a gift. I do hope that when businesses get back to whatever the new normal will be that employers include dogs as part of their back to the office plan. Today Mango is a staple at Starboard Wealth Planners on Agricola St. There are no fewer than four dogs on any given day in the office, two puppies and two seniors. When a business owner comes through our doors the first thing that they are greeted with is a gentle soul who has seen a lot of joy and a lot of tears. Who has the wisdom of knowing exactly how to comfort you. Mango turns 11 today. He has shown a lot of people, especially me, that life is too short to take it fast. That slow and steady, with a good dose of kindness, always wins the race. That tomorrow will have it challenges just like today did but for right now taking time for a snuggle might just be what is needed most. Happy Birthday buddy, you are a legend.

On this day last year I was in Boston. As a delegate of the first female led Nova Scotia trade mission to Boston we worked and played hard. Solidifying business and personal relationships that have only strengthened in this year of the pivot. Tonight we are gathering again, you guessed it, via Zoom. Although I am certain that Dolly Parton will not be making a cameo, liked she did last year, I am excited to reconnect with the Nova Scotian team and female led businesses in Bo...ston. Thank you @nsbi for the opportunity and for asking me to speak at tonight’s opening ceremony. Looking at the line up I am in impressive company!

I have a confession to make.... I haven’t been wearing shoes during my Zoom workshops :) pants with buttons and zippers yes and I don’t understand this bra less trend but mostly I have been wearing.... slippers! But today I got to facilitate a live workshop and it was AMAZING. I love the energy of an in person class, the real time conversations and expressions.... Thank you to @hamptoninnhfx for the PPE and setting up fantastic social distancing to keep us safe as we learn about $$$$$$. Everything went perfectly except for when I followed the directional arrows right into a closet! Whoops It was fun to put on my @fluvogs again. I have missed you, you gorgeous creatures!!!

Too risky. iPhone XS: $1,200... Newest model is a must. 60 mins learning a new skill... I wish I had the time. 60 mins on Netflix... Time flies. Let's watch another one. Money and Time are resources.
