The water in the Koi tank is at 9C (49F) today and the fish are still actively swimming around, but aren’t interested in food. (I stopped feeding them when the water temperature went down to 10 ). The filters are now shut off but the large aeration discs will run all winter. Easy maintenance now. Good nite Koi!
Chinese mystery snails? Who knew we had any ?
Beautiful sunrise this morning, Nov. 2. (No photo touch ups ).
Today we cut down 3 large spruce trees and a green ash tree. This will give lots more sunshine to these areas, and hopefully, will avoid having to call the power company because a tree fell across the power line - again (3 years in a row).
Triming off all the branches to safely take down a 50' tree
Time to bring in the Waterlilies. I see a huge difference in the growth of the waterlilies that were fertilized with the Plantabs Pond Tabs. The stems are very vigorous, more blooms and the roots are already crowding the pot after one year. Fertilizing with the right fertilizer does make a difference.
My ponds are not big enough to hold this monster!
I can identify with this.
Start of Fish moving time. Transferred the 4 inside koi from the waterfall pool into the winter tank (2000 gallons) in the greenhouse. This is a beautiful butterfly koi, and he has gotten so big because he is such a piggy with the food. (That's my foot on the left side, for size comparison.)
I have waited all summer long to see a lotus blooming in my pond, and finally, High Noon has produced a blossum. This is Day 4. I have other buds, but don't know if they will open as the weather is getting cooler. I did bring the lotus pots into the greenhouse.
There is a potential frost warning - 3 degrees C tonite. Your waterlilies will be fine - don't forget that the water temperature is still warm. Hyacinths may be touched with frost, but its getting close to the end of the season so I wouldnt worry about them. Umbrella Palms, Papyrus family and Cannas can be brought into your garage for tonite if you are in an open area. Otherwise, all should still be fine.
Watch for this invasive plant in your pond!
Our covered bridge is almost complete! Lots of hard work done in the last couple days by these 2.

Purple Joy is a beautiful tropical waterlily, with bright green leaves which have a dark purple underside. Very Striking!
We ran a contest to find images for the IWGS webite banners. The pictures that were submitted were amazing! Which ones will you vote for? Remember - you can only pick 3!
What a harrowing drive home last night! Picked up my car from the repair shop just before the storm hit, and waited in a store until I thought the worst was over. It wasnt. I drove into the storm on my way home, detouring because a portion of the road was blocked by a fallen tree and driving around a couple others fallen part way across the road. At Aqualine, the other 2 tree tops (40' long) also came down off the tree that lost one of its top 2 days ago. Other tree damage too. More fire wood! We were lucky more didnt come down. Almost lost one of our equipment sheds - frame looks twisted, but one end stayed anchored. Arrived home to find a river rushing down our lane, and some going into our window well and the basement. Could have been worse, 1 3/4" rain on our rain gauge - 30 minutes worth!
Nymphaea 'Miss Siam' - isn't it stunning? This is a hardy water lily. I was not able to get this variety this year but will certainly try to have it for sale next year.
Another storm, another tree.
Please read - if you are a fisher person, watch for these. No catch and release!
Lots of wildlife at Aqualine!
Our hyacinths are growing and multiplying very quickly! Come to Aqualine where you can buy 2 and get 2 FREE!
If you have this plant in your personal collection, please note that the yellow Iris Pseudocorus is prohibited invasive in Alberta. This is the flowering season for them, so cut off the flowers so they dont spread the seeds. They are difficult to dig up.
If you have a beautiful photo of something water gardening related, enter it in the IWGS photo contest!
Do you have a beautiful water garden photo? Enter it in the IWGS banner photo contest! July 15 is the deadline.
Water Hyacinths bloom if they feel like it, and apparently, the hyacinths at Aqualine feel like blooming right now. So pretty! Buds are hard to notice in the foliage until suddenly, there is a beautiful bloom for a couple of days, and then its gone.
