Thanks to the great work of one of our officers, the Alberta Aquatic Invasive Species Program recently stopped its 30th mussel-fouled boat of the season from ...entering Alberta. Last week, a traffic sheriff intercepted a driver trying to bypass the Dunmore Inspection Station with their boat in tow. The officer brought the driver back for an inspection and inspectors with Alberta Environment and Parks discovered the boat was transporting invasive mussels. Inspectors quarantined and sealed the boat to its trailer unit and were able to notify officials in British Columbia of the driver’s arrival; the two provinces work together to notify each other when boats with invasive species are headed there as a final destination. This collaborative effort between Alberta Sheriffs and Alberta Environment and Parks prevented serious harm to Alberta’s water bodies. Aquatic invasive species are non-native organisms that end up in Alberta’s water. These species cause, or have high potential to cause, harm to our environment, economy, and human health as they become established outside their natural range. Many aquatic invasive species are very difficult to eradicate once established, so prevention is essential. Any watercraft entering Alberta, whether motorized, non-motorized, or commercially hauled, must stop at one of the highway inspection stations in the province. If you are transferring a watercraft or equipment used in water between water bodies, make sure to properly clean, drain and dry between uses. On October 5, 2020, Calgary’s City Council unanimously approved Calgary’s Source Water Protection Policy! Congratulations to The City of Calgary Water Resource...s Team for making Source Water Protection a priority. Conserving healthy, functioning riparian areas in our source water landscapes has multiple benefits to all downstream water users. The Council policies can be found here: https://www.calgary.ca//council-policy-/policyupdates.html https://www.calgary.ca//ci/council-policy-library/uep.html This policy builds on Calgary’s existing Riparian Action Program. Cows and Fish continues to work closely with The City of Calgary to monitor the health of Calgary’s riparian areas and their many impressive ongoing riparian restoration and enhancement projects. Quantifying Conservation Effects on Multiple Wetland Ecosystem Services: Understanding Tradeoffs is the Name of the Game October 22, 3:00 p.m. ET This Conservation Outcomes Webinar will highlight the Integrated Landscape Modeling Partnership (ILMP) and its application to wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region in the northern Great Plains. The ILMP is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and its aim i...s to identify, evaluate, and develop geospatial models to quantify services derived from wetland ecosystems and to determine the effects of conservation practice implementation. This webinar will explore wetland ecosystem services, conservation benefits, and the tradeoffs inherent in conservation practice implementation and wetlands restoration. The webinar will be presented by Dr. David Mushet, Research Wildlife Biologist and Chief of the Climate and Land-use Branch at the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center in Jamestown, North Dakota. Dr. Mushet is lead scientist for USGS on the Integrated Landscape Modeling Partnership. Access the webinar [https://nrcs.adobeconnect.com/ceap2/] a few minutes before the webinar starts. Closed captioning is available.
