Current Update for our Island Community, As of today, all customers will be required to wear a mask while in our store and rental. Due to the rightful urgency and seriousness of this order by the Public Health Officer of BC, customers must and will be refused service if they do not wear a face mask while inside the building starting today at opening. If you are unable to wear a mask for reasons that are not exempt by the order you can call the store at 250-247-8157 to arrange... a safe curbside pick-up. We will also be providing single-use disposable masks for customers who need a mask to use while quantities last, please safely and properly dispose of these masks when you finish using them. We ask that you please wear a mask even in the yard when near other customers and especially when you are with one of our employees, who will continue wearing their provided masks. It's unfortunate COVID-19 has reached a point where these restrictions are required but for the health and safety of our families, friends, and fellow British Columbians, it is a necessary step we must take. Our different trucks over the years! Being on an Island, getting material to our store is difficult. One of the ways we do this is by bringing them ourselves. Having big and capable trucks has always been important so we can reliably get even the largest loads over to Gabriola and to job sites. If you had your house built with material from us, there's a good chance at least part of the material came to Gabriola on one of these trucks!... Here are some images of our store when we opened in 1986 and what it looked like back then. Here are a few interesting things about Arbutus when we opened. Our very first customer wanted a box of screws we didn't have, so we went and got it from town for them. Space in the store was limited and with no warehouses, we could only stock a single can of every paint and stain, so when you got one that was all! We also didn't have popcorn back then, instead offering hot coffee to our customers.

Today marks our 35th anniversary!!! Arbutus Building Supplies opened on March 1st, 1986. We will be sharing more photos and posts this week about our 35 great years on Gabriola so make sure to follow us! In the meantime, check out our whole story below!

That was quite the windstorm! The canceled ferries caused some issues for our delivery truck headed home this week. Fortunately, Home Hardware can get our truck on BCFerries or Seaspan, meaning if there’s a ferry running somewhere, we can get our products and your orders here! Did you know that the big yellow Home Hardware truck you see delivering to our store comes from Wetaskiwin, Alberta? That’s where our western Distribution Centre is! Every week that truck leaves on Tuesday night and, if there are no unexpected delays, arrives here on Gabriola by Thursday afternoon.
