We are getting close to finishing up my old pal Andy Eichhorn's solo debut. I love it (and him) very much.

Friends: I accidentally found out that the Heart Failure Research Unit quarantine record Dustin and I made came out yesterday (ol' Dusty is an enigma, that is for sure). Way back in March (remember March? ...crazy) he and the family were down south on a vacation when the "Get back here" alarms went off. They got back to Edmonton and had to quarantine for 2 weeks, which was probably stressful enough with 2 kids and the unknowable threat that was just making its presence felt...... but on top of that, being a doctor and all, Dustin had the existential angst of not knowing what he was walking into after his quarantine was done. So what goes one do in that situation? Well, Dusty spent the time writing some stuff and then put some things down on his phone and sent em to me. And then I did some stuff to some of the things and a record came out of it. It is sad and scared and anxious and hopeful all at the same time. I love it, and I love Dustin, and I'd be really happy if you listened to it. Today, this is my favorite song on it. https://heartfailureresearchunit.bandcamp.com//burning-sta

I'm very excited for you to hear this new EP by my dear friend Andy Eichhorn. They are beautiful lil nuggets of jangle-power-pop and Andy voice is as great as ever. Everybody who played on it Ribsy Ludwig Chris Byrne Russell Broom ) knocked it outta the park, and I'm happy I got help out on it. Please buy a copy if you like it.

Been working on some stuff in here and I'm feeling pretty grateful for this huge weird music family I get to live in. You have kept me alive... like, actually a...live. Thinking about all the things that I've heard in here, the people I grew to know and care about and love in here, how many songs and laughs and tears in here... how much I've learned in here. Ack. Its mindblowing. Been thinking about making a record of songs by my friends who've recorded here. I dunno if you think of it this way, but I think the songs of my friends are the best songs. The problem is I would have to make a very long record (and also learn how to play a lot better) to do them justice. So I dunno. Maybe its just a dream... maybe its just a dream... maybe its just a dream that I like having. When I'd finally had enough of Hot Wax and quit on the spot with no plan in place after Xmas 2008, I was freaked out and didn't know how I was gonna pay the bills. 2 days after that, Brendan Fraser called me up asked if he could pay me to make his record. He wasn't the first one to ask me that, but he was the first one to hire me after I had to rely 100% on music making to eat. I've always loved this song we made back then and it has a very special place in my heart. It would definitely be on this fantasy record of mine if I were to do it. Maybe with a big choir and some gospel organ. Here's the original... https://foresttate.bandcamp.com/track/the-fall And down below is a video of me figuring out how I might play it if I played it.

I dunno how many of you know this, but over the last 10 years I've made 7 records with my friend Dustin under the moniker Heart Failure Research Unit. I have never met anyone with a purer motivation to make music than him. He eschews all social media/promotion and rarely (and I mean RARELY) plays shows, choosing instead to be a doctor, father and husband in Edmonton. I love his songs and am honored that he entrusted me with guiding all these records. Over the years, band mem...Continue reading
