We broke ground today and began to unravel the many mysteries of what lies underneath the Anthropology Building's front lawn #archaeology #archaeologist #archaeological #archaeologicalsite #anthropology #uoft #highschool #summercamp #summer
It's a little late to be saying this but we couldn't have a had a better first day! Archives, lab tours and historical artifacts filled up the first day of our program yesterday and it was great getting to dig through the files of the UC Fire at UTARMS with these up and coming archaeologists #archaeology #archaeologist #archaeological #anthropology #prehistory #history #archives #ucfire #highschool #summer #summercamp #uoft
We want to introduce someone very special to you, our second Program Manager Alisa Mahrova! Alisa was also a co-founder of the program and our operation wouldn't exist today if it wasn't for her. She graduated with a Specialist in Archaeology in 2016 from UofT and is currently a licensed archaeologist working primarily in southern Ontario. To her, Archaeology is so engaging because it allows her to learn and tell forgotten stories about human ingenuity and collaboration that ...connect us to the world within and around us "My favorite site is very trivial and unlikely to be mentioned in the press. It was a single ceramic pot, found at a portage in Northern Ontario. It has little aesthetic value and a lack of accompanying assemblages provides limited interpretive data, but it is a single, little moment in the life of a person in the past, so difficult to discern at large sites, preserved in history. And this perceived direct connection between me - an archaeologist - and the owner of the pot, humbles me to this day" #archaeology #archaeologist #archaeological #history #humanities #science #anthropology #feildwork #excavation #summer #summercamp #uoft #toronto #ontario #canada #canada150 #highschool #pottery #human #humanhistory See more
The view from the beautiful Birch Cove! It is here that University of Toronto Professor Katherine Patton conducts field excavations surrounding coastal hunter gathers and shell middens. It's a pretty great place to work #archaeology #archaeologist #archaeologicalsite #archaeological #summer #summercamp #highschool #beach #beaches #cove #water #ocean #novascotia #uoft #toronto
One of the most engaging aspects of our program is our mock excavation which gives our students a taste of what being an archaeologist is really like! With this hands-on experience, our students gain practical archaeological skills that are involved in an actual excavation, such as drawing profiles, setting up a grid, and much more! It's also pretty fun to see what lies beneath the front lawn of UofT's Anthropology building #archaeology #archaeologist #archaeologicalsite #archaeological #anthropology #history #highschool #summer #summercamp #toronto #torontolife #uoft
