November 11th was architect James Renwick Jr.’s birthday! Born in 1818 in New York City, James Renwick Jr. has been called one of the most successful American architects of his time by the Encyclopedia of American Architecture! Some of his most notable projects include the Smithsonian Institution Building in Washington, D.C., and the St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City.

Designed by Acre Architects Inc., the Into the Wild residence is a remarkable embodiment of contemporary architecture in New Brunswick. To one side of this building is a view of the Bay of Fundy, and the other overlooks the city of Saint John. To represent this dichotomy, this project emphasizes a number of contrasts old versus new, traditional versus contemporary, urban versus wilderness, and industry versus environment. The materials for this project resonate with the spi...rit of the place. Many elements are made from craft and raw materials, some of which are a nod to Saint John’s industrial cityscape, and some of the more natural elements are a reflection of the greenery on the building’s site. Happy World Architecture Day! Every day we are surrounded by countless buildings, all with their own unique charms and innovations. Although it is easy for these to blend in with our daily lives, each of the structures you see has a history of its own and has gone through a long process of careful planning and designing. These buildings help define the character of our cities, and they make up many of the places we live, work, and connect with others.... Today, take a moment to appreciate all the ways that architecture enriches our lives.
