What happened It was November 2019 when Marriott realized that hackers had been in the system since July 2014. Marriotts massive hack came after a string of security breaches resulting in the theft of personal data to a whopping 339 million customers of its Starwood hotel...s. The information breach included 18.5 million encrypted passport numbers, 9.1 million encrypted payment card numbers and 385,000 valid card numbers in addition to 5.25 million unencrypted passport numbers. Marriott called on 3rd party investigators and soon found malware on the Starwood IT systems: A Remote Access Trojan (RAT) allowed hackers to covertly access, surveil and gain control over a computer.
