We have just returned home from the 2020 International 4-Wheel Drive Trainers’ Association Testing for Certification (I4WDTA TFC) held in New Mexico, where we were fortunate to work with the worlds best 4-Wheel Drive Trainers. To see firsthand the hard work, dedication and professionalism of the I4WDTA Cadre is truly amazing. I am honoured to stand beside you all and I am very grateful to be part of such a wonderful organization. Thank you to all of you for this incredible... experience and your commitment to Excellence in 4-Wheel Drive Training. To all the participants in attendance at the TFC, it was an honour to meet and work with you. There was not one participant that did not dedicate themselves to the TFC. Do or Do Not. There is no try. Yoda summarized it best when describing the power in giving something your all and not just giving it a try. You certainly gave it your all! I will not forget these past three weeks. Thank you.#i4wdta

After a fantastic week of training with some really great clients our equipment was definitely in need of a thorough cleaning and inspection. When we consider equipment we always look at its intended purpose as well as secondary and tertiary uses for our gear. For example, these ladders make excellent drying racks, when combined with the average Canadian’s weapon of choice, the hockey stick, we can accomplish great things.... Always clean and inspect your equipment, avoid walking under ladders and never, in any case, throw out an old hockey stick! No matter how thin the blade may be after its been retired to street hockey use, this old stick still has a lot left to contribute.#recoverygear #overlanding #i4wdta #4wdabc#4wdtraining #syntheticwinchline #4wd #overlandtraining #hockeylife

We spent this past Saturday working with the 4WDABC Wheeling Wisely, Penticton & District Search & Rescue and Princeton GSAR. It is great to see volunteer groups working together and improving their skills in order to better assist the local and greater communities when called upon. If you aren’t presently a member of the 4WDABC, you absolutely have to sign up. You will not only be able to attend their volunteer member training programs at a discount but you will become part... of a great 4-Wheel Drive community. You can really make a difference to ensure continued responsible land use and access to the backcountry. Great job to all the hard working 4WDABC volunteers who dedicate their time away from their busy lives to make these training programs and so much more possible! #wheelingwisely #i4wdta #4wdtraining #overlanding #searchandrescue #overlandtraining #fullsizeoverland #4wdabc

We just got back from a really great day working with another fantastic client! Vehicle recovery begins with an understanding and respect for the tools you have at your disposal. A very wise, older, but extremely handsome 4-Wheel Drive Master Trainer once told me; When it comes to vehicle recovery or nearly any situation you may face in life, you don’t always have what you want, but you always have what you need. We spent the day working with @edhubbell assisting him with... vehicle recovery solutions for his non-winch equipped F-150. By using a combination of hand powered and vehicle powered recovery equipment and techniques Ed was able to safely overcome many of the challenges he is faced with daily when conducting his work in the backcountry. Thank you for all your hard work today Ed! It is a rare occasion to see anyone as excited as you were to execute a double line pull (DLP) with the Hi-Lift Jack. Improvise, Adapt and Overcome! You really rocked it sir!#i4wdta #4wdtraining #recoverygear #overlanding #hiliftjack #vehiclerecovery #offroadrecovery

We’ve just returned from our recent vacation where we were travelling portions of the historic Alexander Mackenzie Trail. The trail presented many challenges and there where a few late night camp setups where the fire dried out our boots and clothes. The fishing was excellent and the scenery was amazing but what really made the trip special was the wonderful group of people that we shared our adventure with. Thank you, my friends, for the great company on the trail and around the campfire. I can’t wait for my vacation next season and more time on the trail with you all! Shaun from The Story Till Now has done a fantastic job of documenting our adventure and will be posting a second video next week. I will go anywhere, provided it be forward.

The Jack & Stack recovery method can help you get Un-Stuck. The Hi-Lift jack can be used to lift a wheel on your vehicle allowing you to place material under your tire or position your MAXTRAX to help you drive off an obstacle. The wheel lift can be accomplished several different ways, a few of them are:... 1. Basket A strap can be positioned around the tire, carefully, then connected to the lifting surface of the Hi-Lift Jack and used to lift the wheel. 2. Soft Shackles A soft shackle or combination of soft shackles can be passed through the spokes of the wheel to provide a connection point to the lifting surface of your Hi-Lift Jack, the wheel can then be raised. 3. Hi-Lift Lift-Mate The hooks of the Lift-Mate can be positioned in the spokes of the wheel; the assembly is then fitted over the lifting surface of Hi-Lift Jack and the lift can be performed. *The base plate of the Hi-Lift Jack can be repositioned to allow you to locate the jack slightly closer to the wheel, helping to improve your lifting angle. Prior to performing any of these wheel lift techniques using the Hi-Lift Jack, we recommend you seek out training from an I4WDTA certified trainer in order to increase your level of confidence and safety when using this tool. Our 4-Wheel Drive Education Programs can help prepare you for the challenges you may face when operating in difficult terrain. We are an I4WDTA certified and Safe-Xtract certified 4-Wheel drive education service provider.#i4wdta #hiliftjack #offroadtraining #4wdtraining #vehiclerecovery #overlandtraining #overlanding #4wd

The Hi-Lift Jack is one of the most useful tools you can add to your recovery toolbox. The jack is capable of lifting, lowering, winching, clamping and spreading. With the purchase of your Hi-Lift Jack you are provided with an instruction manual, this manual provides excellent guidance on how to operate and maintain your jack as well as describe its limitations. If you have misplaced your instruction manual, one can be downloaded from the Hi-Lift website, 10 minutes spent ...reviewing this document is well worth the investment. Winching with your Hi-Lift Jack is definitely going to require some work, if your total resistance is light (< 1000lbs), your rigging can be configured for a speed advantage. A 4:1 speed advantage means that for every 1 inch we travel along the standard of the Hi-Lift, the vehicle moves 4 inches. The 4:1 speed advantage requires 4 times more effort on the handle to move the load four times faster, thus the total stuck load being recommended as < 1000 lbs. What this means is that with a stuck load of 1000 lbs, the Hi-Lift Jack will see 4000 lbs. The benefit of this rigging configuration is that we can move the vehicle approximately 10 feet before a reset of the running gear is required saving us from potentially doing more work than we have to. Safe-Xtract has developed and has provided this illustration using components from the Safe-Xtract recovery product line. The use of synthetic winch line extensions, safety lanyards and soft shackles allow you to use existing components from the Safe-Xtract recovery kit, set exact line lengths using the X-Lock or Line Lock and saves considerable weight as there is no need for the use of chain with Hi-Lift winching operations. Training and equipment can be purchased directly from us, equipment may also be purchased from Safe-Xtract or the ASR Offroad website. Please contact us anytime for more information.

There are many benefits to installing a Synthetic Winch Line (WL) on your Winch, a few of them are: Strength - For a given diameter, good quality synthetic WL will have a higher minimum tensile strength (MTS) than wire rope. Operator Fatigue - Synthetic WL weighs approximately 1/6th less than wire rope for an equivalent diameter and length, therefore handling of synthetic WL requires less energy.... Safety Synthetic WL is constructed using a 12-strand neutral braid, this allows it to remain torque free. In the unlikely event of a WL failure, the WL will travel linearly and not flail which may occur in the event of a wire rope failure. Synthetic fibres will not create meat-hooks or fish-hooks potentially cutting your gloves and hands when handling it. Compression in wire rope causing crushing or kinking requires the ropes retirement, with synthetic WL the rope can be flexed, returned to its original state and continue to be used safely. The ASR brand 3/8 X 70’, 17500lb MTS Enhanced Plasma WL is built with 10’ indicator markings which allow for visual reference of line movement during operations, the WL is built with an additional polymeric coating to protect against abrasion, water/heavy weather and UV exposure. This WL was attached to the winch drum using a constrictor knot, when performed correctly, this knot has load holding capability, it will retain your WL on the drum and by design tightens on itself under load. Our customer was interested in upgrading his WL, Tree Saver (TS) and Soft Shackles (SS), he will now be better prepared for vehicle recovery as well as benefit from an increased level of safety. We are always happy to be able to assist our customers with equipment selection to ensure they purchase the appropriate equipment for their needs. Soft Shackles can be used to form connections points in our recovery system, they offer flexibility in application, reduced weight and are extremely strong. Not all Soft Shackles are created equal, when selecting a soft shackle look for one built using the Button Knot Dual Leg design, this offers 225% of single line Minimum Tensile Strength (MTS) versus soft shackles built using the Diamond knot design which provides 136-144% of single line MTS. Safe-Xtract 7/16 x 10, 470...00lb MTS Soft Shackles are constructed using the Button Knot Dual Leg design, they are built with Plasma rope and have marked Green Load Points to ensure correct load placement. On each soft shackle you will find a serialized tag with the MTS clearly displayed as well as an additional tag illustrating correct soft shackle orientation. The Soft Shackles are built using high visibility colours and fibre-lock coating which provides additional UV and Abrasion resistance. When we install a lift on our vehicles we alter many inherent design features which help our vehicle steer and track properly, one of these features is caster. Caster is the angle of the steering axis with respect to the vertical axis when looking at the vehicle from the side. Negative caster is when the steering axis is inclined towards the front of the vehicle. Positive caster is when the steering axis is inclined towards the rear of the vehicle. If the caster is too ...negative, the steering will be light and the vehicle will wander and be difficult to keep in a straight line. Our 80 series has a small 2 lift and had caster correction bushings installed to help compensate for additional height and axle rotation, however the vehicle was still difficult to control on the highway leading to increased driver fatigue and reduced safety margins. In order to increase our caster we recently installed DELTA VS caster correcting front radius arms. The new radius arms have shown a marked improvement, our vehicle now has stable and predictable handling characteristics which will help reduce driver fatigue on long trips and improve safety.#i4wdta #offroadtraining #80serieslandcruiser #4wdabc

When incorporating a pulley block into our recovery system we can reduce the load on the winch, this is beneficial for a number of reasons; increased operating time due to lower amperage draw, reduced load on the vehicles electrical system and reduced load holding demands on the winch brake. The Safe-Xtract 20000WLL pulley block is designed with features that complement synthetic line such as a maintenance free deep groove polymer pulley which helps retain line shape under h...eavy loads, wide side plates with chamfered holes and radiused edges to prevent pinching and crushing of synthetic line as well as self-cleaning bronze side plate bushings. The Safe-Xtract 20000WLL pulley block is soft shackle compliant and can be used with appropriately sized screw pin bow shackles, it is machined from 6061 billet aluminum allowing it to remain light and extremely strong. Please contact us or find these items on the ASR Offroad website should you be interested in purchasing the Safe-Xtract 20000WLL pulley block or other Safe-Xtract equipment. When upgrading your winch line (WL), select a line with a minimum tensile strength (MTS) between 1.7 to 2.0 times the rated pulling power of your winch. If you are purchasing a winch line extension (WLE) consider the load it may be required to handle, if you are using a pulley block your WLE may need to be one size larger than the line you are using on the winch drum. Our friend Davy and Rescue Jeep understand the benefits of quality recovery equipment and chose our ASR bran...d 3/8 X 70’, 17500lb MTS Enhanced Plasma WL built with 10’ indicator markings to track line movement and polymeric coating to protect against abrasion, water/heavy weather and UV exposure. To further extend his recovery capabilities, Davy also equipped himself with a 7/16 X 70’, 21000lb MTS WLE, a 3x 10’ Tree Saver Strap (TS) rated at 46500lb MTS built with high capacity heavy duty polyester, reinforced edges and a protective layer of Cordura on the inside of the eyes and on one side of the strap for excellent durability. Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get." Forrest may not have knew much about how to unstick a 1-ton pickup but he sure knew that it was best to be prepared for the unexpected. While no vehicle recovery is exactly the same, we can ensure our recovery planning process is consistent, mitigates risk and retains flexibility. Scene assessments are important for your immediate safety and those of others. Stuck assessments are critical in determin...ing casualty resistance and a practical recovery solution. Flexibility is crucial, know when it is time for a different approach. Don’t take candy from strangers. Chances are you’ve heard this saying at some point during your childhood. The same applies to your recovery equipment. When handed a piece of equipment that didn’t come from your personal recovery bag, look for labels and ratings to ensure it is up to the task, always inspect equipment to ensure it is in good working order. For this recovery we set up a 4:1 system, our winch line is a Safe-Xtract 7/16 x 60ft line, rated at 21000lb MTS and marked at 3’ intervals allowing us to easily pickup line movement while winching. We are using a Safe-Xtract x 80ft line rated at 31300lb MTS, 3-Safe-Xtract 7/16x 10, 47000lb MTS soft shackles, 2-Safe X-Tract 3x10’ Tree Savers rated at 46500lb MTS, 2-Safe-Xtract 30000lb WLL pulley blocks, 6.5T CM anchor shackles as well as 4 T Van Beest anchor shackles both with a 6:1 safety factor. Additional information on driving resource road branch lines; To avoid getting bogged, operate your vehicle in 4WD low range, reduce your speed and be particularly vigilant when scanning the road surface. If the conditions do not present any visible threats, maintain a slow pace, a steady throttle input and listen to your vehicle. When your forward progress slows or you hear the engine note change, in most cases the best thing you can do is stop. Secure your vehicle, perform an assessment of the ground conditions and determine the best course of action, this may mean reversing out, exploring an alternate route or allowing soil conditions time for improvement before venturing down this path again.#i4wdta #4wdabc #offroading

Not all Soft Shackles are created equal. There are five common soft shackle designs, each having a different strength capacity. The weakest and cheapest of th...ese is the spliced loop single leg made with a diamond knot, which offers about 104% of the single line Minimum Tensile Strength (MTS). The spliced loop single leg design is favored by many manufacturers because it is the easiest to tie and uses the least amount of rope, making it cheaper to manufacture. In contrast, Safe-Xtract uses the strongest design, the button knot double leg. This design uses more rope and it takes much longer to tie the button knot - however, this design offers 225% of the single line MTS. Safe-Xtract has verified this with testing in accordance with Cordage Institute testing standards. Spliced loop single leg soft shackles made out of the same material may look similar to the untrained eye, but are less than half the strength of a Safe-Xtract soft shackle. Like we said, not all soft shackles are created equal! With respect to design, Safe-Xtract Soft Shackles are incredibly strong and durable, made in the USA of the highest strength 12-Strand High Molecular Weight Poly-Ethylene (HMPE) rope available. They feature a protective high-visibility Neon Orange polyurethane coating and are marked with green loading lines that make safe use intuitive. SX Vehicle Recovery Kits and Packs are engineered such that SX Soft Shackles have a strength rating of approximately four times winch capacity. http://www.asroffroad.com/safe-xtract-1/ See more
