ACO Toronto held their 2019 Symposium on Main Streets and sees this multiple listing as a great step forward. More is needed from other departments to ensure the survival of main street businesses, a historic pattern of use which is important to any creative city and exists in the relationship between the buildings. Many of these designations are for contextual reasons, and as much about keeping the physical fabric because it supports this complex historic pattern of use. Using the Ontario Heritage Act to work like this will be challenged by many. This brave first step is important, long overdue, and should be widely supported.

Its official, York Square will soon be demolished. Toronto East York Community Council ignored staff and the Toronto Preservation Board and voted in favour of demolition this week. York Square was important, but no longer appreciated in its neighbourhood. There is a proposal for a 29 storey condominium tower to replace it which area residents favour. At a time when urban renewal was the norm, this seminal 1968 project by developer David Wookey and architects Diamond and Myers marked a world breakthrough in combining new and old and making new places. It was widely copied and set a pattern for gentle intensification in Toronto, which still resonates. ACO Toronto and Old Toronto recently released a video on its history, which may be all that will be left to tell its story. http://ow.ly/xRYT50Ci5cY

On October 17 2020 ACO Toronto and Giaimo revealed a new temporary public art installation, called Brighter Days Ahead, as part of The Oculus Revitalization (one of Park People / Amis des parcs Public Space Incubator projects). Designed by Toronto architecture and heritage conservation firm Giaimo, and sponsored by Creative Silhouettes, the art installation is made of yellow stripes that represent sun rays shining through the park pavilion’s Oculus and also references to the ...vibrant future planned for The Oculus. Located in the City of Toronto’s South Humber Park along the Humber River Recreational Trail, the art installation will be up for the next few months until the restoration of the pavilion takes place in 2021. Check it out, safely while physically distancing, and tag us in your photos on social media! https://mailchi.mp/0/new-temporary-public-art-at-the-oculus See more
