SNOWFALL WARNING Yesterday's special weather statement for the Coquihalla (Meritt to Kamloops) has been upgraded to a snowfall warning. A band of snow has set up over the Coquihalla Highway from Merritt to Kamloops, and along with falling freezing levels, will continue to give snow heavy at times and reduced visibilities to elevations near and above 1000 metres today. The intensity of the snow may fluctuate due to the convective nature of the snow. The heavy snow is forecast... to taper off this evening. Details: https://bit.ly/2YwiwIi Current Road Conditions and Events: https://www.drivebc.ca/mobile/events/index.html If you're heading out, remember to Ensure your vehicle is well equipped for winter driving (i.e., winter tires, chains, extra windshield fluid, a winter survival kit, e.t.c.). Give yourself lots of extra time to reach your destination. Slow down and drive to conditions. Remember to give winter maintenance vehicles plenty of room to work. Stay at least 10-car lengths back and wait to pass until the truck has moved over and turned off its lights. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for taillights ahead and be prepared to stop.

With snow on some of our roadways this morning, we thought this would be a good time to share our top two tips for sharing the road with snow plows: No matter what, DO NOT PASS PLOWS ON THE RIGHT. Many plows are equipped with a 9ft (that's about half the size of GM pickup with a long truck bed) wing plow, which extends from the truck's right side. If you try to pass, you could hit it, which puts you, the plow driver, and others on the road at risk. DO GIVE WINTER MAINTE...NANCE VEHICLES LOTS OF ROOM to work. When coming up behind one, stay about 10-car lengths back. If you're coming towards the plow, pull as far over to the right as is safe. This helps limit the chances of your vehicle getting hit by snow, sand, and other winter abrasives. More on sharing the road with snow plows: https://bit.ly/2JcTYwn

It's been a tough year for many and we wanted to do something to give back. So, we've partnered with Save On Foods in Kamloops to put on a #PlowAwayHunger campaign. Our goal is to fill the equivalent of one 10-cubic meter plow truck box with food item donations for the @KamloopsFoodBank. When we reach the goal, we'll donate an additional $2500 in groceries. To join us, all you have to do is stop by a Save On Foods in Kamloops between December 10th and 17th and put your donation in the bin by the check out lanes.

When you see a snow plow on the highway, it can be tempting to try + pass. Don't. It's dangerous. A snow plow's wing plow extends 9 feet from its right side - that's roughly half the length of GMC pickup truck with a long-bed cab. If you try to pass, you could hit it, putting you, the plow driver, & others on the road in danger. But, wait, I can't see the wing plow. Does that mean it's not there? No. Despite its size + bright orange colour, the wing plow is often obscured by ...flying snow, which means you might not see it. So, when you come across a plow truck ahead of you, slow down, stay 10 car lengths back, & wait until the plow driver pulls over + turns off the flashing lights before passing. Last Thursday, we headed up to Bonaparte Lake to clear the forest service road that connects BCHwy24 to the lake so that residents who live there year-round could access the main highway and essentials. We used a grader because graders can move significantly more snow than plows and tend to be better at doing more technical snow removal work, things like working on narrow terrain like this forestry road, cleaning up around bridges, ice-blading, maintaining compact, and pushing back shoulders. #EssentialServices4U #CDNConstructionGives
