HMCS STAR is grieving the sudden and unexpected loss of a valued shipmate, PO1 Douglas Noonan. He was a member of STAR who served in the Royal Canadian Navy for... over 37 years, joining through the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) in 1983. He earned a strong reputation early in his career, performing as a Boatswain all over the nation. He later accepted a position in the Hamilton Recruiting Centre. He greatly enjoyed recruiting, sharing his experience at the recruiting booth and in the classroom. He was dedicated, spending nearly a decade in the role which led hundreds to a career in the Canadian Armed Forces. He returned to HMCS STAR as Chief Boatswain’s Mate (ie. Buffer) but was called to return to the West Coast. He loved motorcycles, his dog, the city of Hamilton and was a proud sailor. In addition to these amazing qualities, he is the leading character in many naval stories fondly told by his mess mates. As part of our naval family, please take a moment to reflect on his life and his legacy. He will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace Doug. ‘Twas the night before Christmas The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, along with an ensemble cast of invited actors, have recorded a very special ...reading of the much-loved poem. The poem was recorded in support of the Actors’ Benevolent Fund, of which The Prince of Wales has been Patron for over 20 years taking over the role from Her Majesty The Queen in 2000. The charity supports actors and stage managers who are unable to work due to illness, injury or old age and those experiencing financial hardship particularly during the Coronavirus pandemic. This year has been particularly difficult for those working in the industry and in April the charity launched an Emergency Grant Fund to support those in their profession who are experiencing financial hardship owing to the pandemic. The Pipes and Drums would like to wish a happy 76th birthday to retired Pipe Major John Terence, AKA; JT Argyll, Pipe Major Emeritus and, to one of us, Dad. John joined the Argylls in 1958 and , if you do the math, he was 14 years old. John moved quickly through the ranks and was appointed Pipe Major in 1973. John encouraged the members to be soldier/musicians, sending most of the pipers and drummers in his charge to obtain infantry training. John also took the band on many t...rips, some more notable performances include; the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Last Berlin Tattoo, the Canadian International Military Tattoo and the Hamburg Polizei Show. While serving John received the Medal of Military Merit and received his third clasp for his Canadian Decoration from HM Queen Elizabeth II in 2000. In 2000 John retired from the military at the age of 55. John is still a fixture in the Pipes and Drums, continuing to parade and mentor up and coming leaders and pipers. Happy Birthday to you, Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday Pipe Major Emeritus, Happy birthday to you From your pipes and drums family. #argylls, #militarypipers, #4division, #hamont, #canadianarmy,

Today the Pipes and Drums are throwing Thursday back to the Last Tattoo in Berlin in October, 1992. The Pipes and Drums performed with several military Pipes and Drums bands from the British Army. The Argylls were the only Pipes and Drums band from outside the British Army. The Highland dancers joining the massed Pipes and Drums were the Schiehallion Highland dancers from Hamilton, Ontario, who often performed with the Pipes and Drums. A company from the Gordon Highlanders w...ere the torch bearers dancing around the massed Pipes and Drums, and highland dancers If you look closely in the video you can see our Drum Major, Kent Wilson, as a young snare drummer and our Pipe Major, Scott Balinson, as a young piper. Front and center during the entire performance is retired Pipe Major, John Terence, who can still be seen lurking around the armouries and playing with the Pipes and Drums. #Argylls, #31brigade, #militarypiper, #hamiltonmusical, #hamilton, #canadianarmy, #pipesanddrums, #4division, #schiehallion, #HighlandDancing https://youtu.be/NbpKYiI06x0

Today we pause to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Unforgettable Missing in action - presumed dead... Was the wartime message families dread. Though far away, we seemed to feel Your pain from bursts of jagged steel. The reason is clear as time goes by, For us to live - you had to die. You lost your life and we lost you, What more could one be asked to do. To those on board a sunken ship, To those who flew their final trip, To those trapped in a burning tank, We need to remember and to thank. H L Murray

CWO J B (Jack) McQueen MMM served with the Argyll's in World War II as a stretcher bearer, and was wounded while performing his duty. After the war, on November 6 ,1948 , while returning from a regimental reunion in Toronto with the Pipes and Drums, the bus the members were traveling on collided with a streetcar killing 6 of the bus passengers and injuring 29, Jack was among those injured. In the 1970's Jack left his role as the lead drummer with the Pipes and Drums to accep...t the appointment as Regimental Sergeant Major, being promoted at the same to time Chief Warrant Officer. Major Stokes has been a hero of mine since I was a young child, when my family and I would visit her and her husband, former commanding officer Lieutenant Colon...el Stokes. I remember on the wall of their house an article written by the Hamilton Spectator about Major Stokes being awarded the Order of Military Merit. Major Stokes enrolled into the Canadian Armed Forces in 1956, becoming the first female officer to join the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders of Canada. She served in both the Argyll pay office as the unit finance officer and as assistant adjutant. Major Stokes was a woman ahead of her time and paved the way for women in todays Canadian Armed Forces. She spoke about how hard it was for females back then, having to work twice as hard as their male counterparts and she was always the only female on every course she took. She states that she would tell the new females joining the Argylls that you have to earn the men’s respect. Major Stokes recalls being told that no woman shall be above the rank of captain in the unit, because major was a field rank and women were not in field roles in the unit at that time. Major Stokes attended the staff college in Kingston and was the only female on the course. She says that she felt that she had something to prove and therefore, again, worked twice as hard as her male counterparts. In 1973 Major Stokes, then Captain Stokes, paved the way once more for women in the military by becoming the first woman to be awarded the Order of Military Merit. Major Stokes was awarded the Order of Military Merit for the work she did while being stationed in Germany, attached to the Black Watch during the cold war. While there she staffed the coordination and evacuation plan of the women and children of the soldiers stationed in the European theater. Major stokes states that the cold war felt alot different in Europe then it did in Canada. Major Stokes states that there was always a threat of invasion. Major Stokes’ hard work and determination has set a standard for future generations to both admire and respect. The bells of Parliament Hill played several songs paying tribute to yesterday's events at its noon carillon recital today. It included The Campbells Are Coming,... or the Regimental March of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada. That's the regiment Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was serving with when he was gunned down at the National War Memorial.

Today, we remember the service and sacrifice of Cpl Nathan Cirillo. Six years ago, our regimental family suffered a shocking blow upon hearing the news from Ott...awa. Today, we reflect and remember that while tragedies hurt, our triumphs and collective strength in the face of adversity are what define us.

New Commanding Officer for Storied Hamilton Army Regiment The Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders of Canada Princess Louise's conducted a regimental change of comma...nd on May 23, 2020 at John Weir Foote Armoury in Hamilton, Ontario. Command of the regiment was passed from Lieutenant-Colonel Peter St. Denis, to Lieutenant-Colonel Carlo Tittarelli, with Colonel Joe Robinson, Commander of 31 Canadian Brigade Group, presiding over the ceremony. The Argylls were formed in 1903, and have earned battle honours from both world wars, as well as Afghanistan. Currently, the Regiment numbers approximately 150 Army Reserve soldiers, many of whom have served on overseas missions. LCol St. Denis has held the position of Commanding Officer since June of 2015, and had also previously held the position of Commanding Officer with the Queen's Own Rifles of Toronto. His career spans over 35 years, including overseas deployments to Cyprus and Afghanistan. He began his service in the regular force as a non-commissioned, regular force member of the Royal Canadian Regiment before becoming a Reservist. LCol Tittarelli started in the Army as a signaller before eventually commissioning as an infantry officer with the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa, then returning to Hamilton and joining the Argylls. In 2006 he deployed to Afghanistan, and completed his law degree in 2010, and now works as a lawyer in the community. The change of command was conducted as a small, formal event, in lieu of a parade due to COVID-19 restrictions, which do not permit formal parades. The ceremony was held in the Argylls' officer's mess with minimal participants and physical distancing measures observed. Many members of the Argylls are currently involved with ongoing support to COVID-19 efforts, including command of 31 Brigade Territorial Battle Group, a ready force for regional emergency response operations, and also have members overseas, and several preparing to go on overseas missions.
