Therefore, if the breath is agitated so is the mind. In order to quiet and calm the mind we must first learn to regulate the breath. The #incentivespirometer I am using in the video measures my IRV or Inspiratory Reserve Volume. IRV is the maximal volume that can be inhaled from the end-inspiratory level. Having had #chronicbronchitis and #asthma since I was a child, I find a tool like this a useful to show me whether I’m breathing well and filling my lungs properly. The reason for this is the little ball to the right it has to stay within its marked limits while I take each breath and this will only happen if I breathe slowly and calmly. Most breaths I am within my calculated average range, but sometimes I am not. Being an athlete helps with this for sure, but notice my sitting position. I learned when I recently pulled out my old #saxophone in order to effectively nail the lower notes, I needed to adjust my posture to completely relax the #psoasmuscle that runs from around where the #diaphragm sits down into the groin area. Many of the yoga breathing techniques I practice work on opening up the Psoas area as well. So, what are you going to do today? Practice your breathing!
