If you receive an email like the one below, this did not come from the Canada Revenue Agency and is a scam (although it looks remarkably authentic). It came with an attached zip file which I presume contains a virus or other nasty surprises. The Canada Revenue Agency never emails you or your professional advisor about personal income tax information. They will only contact you by phone or snail mail. Hello, Attached is a report on your 2013 tax return and due to no respond... from you in the previous emails we sent to you, your 2013 Tax is under investigation, we need you to go through the pdf attachment to view the tax return report. Just in from the CRA Web Site: Notice Service temporarily unavailable Ensuring that your personal information is not compromised is a priority for us. Upon becoming aware of an internet vulnerability that affects some computer servers used by websites worldwide, we took down our online services, including electronic filing, and are taking steps to ensure that all information and systems remain safe.... At this time, we are not aware that any personal information has been affected; however, we continue to assess and remedy the situation. You can still complete your tax forms, but will have to wait before filing. We are working to bring our online services back up as soon as possible. Updates will be posted as they become available. Thank you for your patience. Expect an extension to the Personal Tax Filing deadline to be announced soon.

If you receive an email that says it is from the Canada Revenue Agency that looks like the following: Dear Member This is to inform you that our system has generated your new secured Electronic PIN to e-file your 2014 tax return.... Please kindly download the microsoft file to securely review it. Thanks Canada Revenue Agency 875 Heron Road Ottawa ON K1A 1B1 THIS IS SPAM. DO NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS OR LINKS FROM THIS EMAIL. The CRA will never email you secure information like this.

Another Halloween surprise from the Ministry of Finance. They have just announced significant changes to the income taxes for families with children under 18 year of age including: -a limited form of income splitting -increasing the Universal Child Care Benefit to $160 per month and introducing a new $60 per month benefit for children aged 7 to 17... -increasing the child care deduction limits by $1,000 per month -increasing the fitness tax credit limit to $1,000 per year Most are effective in 2015 with limited application in 2014 http://www.fin.gc.ca/n14/data/14-155_1-eng.asp
