We all know that feeling of being with friends, family, or maybe even with a date and quickly running out of things to say. Awkwardness fills the space, and the... nerves set in, making it virtually impossible to foster deep connection. We are not alone in this problem. So, what can we do about this? Well, some researchers suggest that the solution may lie in expressing more vulnerability when speaking with others. Social psychologists Arthur and Elaine Aron developed the Fast Friends procedure to facilitate the formation of connection and closeness between people. The procedure includes 36 questions that are designed to encourage people to be open with one another in a way that can enhance closeness. The Fast Friends procedure has been empirically tested and found to be effective. For instance, Aron and colleagues (1997) found that unacquainted people who underwent the Fast Friends procedure reported a greater increase in feelings of closeness compared to a comparison group of pairs who asked one another 36 superficial questions instead. It seems that asking and answering these questions may help reduce that awkward tension, facilitate feelings of closeness and cultivate a deeper understanding of one’s conversational partner. Therefore, perhaps we can also use these conversation starters beyond combating awkwardness, like in more casual encounters with those we'd like to connect with on a deeper level.
