For Shelly Lairar, board member, the pandemic has allowed her to realize her priorities spending more time with her family, enjoying daily walks with her dog, and discovering new winter activities, like cross country skiing and snowshoeing. I am embracing the challenge of COVID-19, but it certainly has not been easy. What helps me is that I know I can ask my friends and family for help, love and a conversation. Throughout the pandemic, Mark Labbe, board member and a first responder, has been able to maintain a level of normalcy because his work life has not changed. But he knows that for many, COVID-19 has had an extraordinary impact on their mental well-being. As we approach the 12-month mark of this pandemic, I know there are people who are suffering from either loneliness, loss of a loved one or lack of human contact with friends for some people they are experiencing all thr...ee. Our board member, Fay Kolpin, shares that walking, walking and more walking is her key to good physical and mental well-being. I have been walking on average 5 to 6 kilometres a day. We are fortunate to be having a really nice winter this year and it’s allowed me to enjoy my walks more than most winters. When not walking, Fay has dug into many good books, worked through numerous crossword puzzles, and enjoyed playing virtual Scrabble with friends.... Fay is also focused on supporting her friends’ mental health. I have a couple of friends who live on their own and have kept in touch with them by phone regularly and visit them when possible (with masks and social distancing). #BellLetsTalk

Don Belton, board member, has made his mental well-being a daily priority during the pandemic. I have been taking our dog, Yoda, out for daily walks, skating on the outdoor rink, exercising daily and working part-time at the nearby gas station. Last week, the Foundation had the honour of recognizing Herve Despres for his care, compassion, and professionalism after one of his clients made a donation to the Foundation with a message of thanks. Did you know that the Diagnostic Imaging Department at the Arnprior Hospital displays three beautiful art pieces on the wall that are intended to cheer up patients and clients. Marg Lamendeau has called the Ottawa Valley home for over 44 years. Her art is inspired by rural nostalgia, wildlife, landscapes, flowers and of course people. Marg stopped in recently and made donation of another of her beautiful art pieces to be given to a patient or client, who may be having a particularly hard day. Linda Gibson considers herself lucky that her breast cancer was detected early thanks to the ARH team. After I had my routine mammogram in August 2018, I got a call back right away that I had dense breasts and I’d need to come back for another mammogram and ultrasound, explained Linda. When I was having my ultrasound at ARH, the radiologist came back to talk to me and said that I needed to get biopsied right away. The biopsy confirmed that Linda had a tumour in her breas...t the size of a freckle. A couple weeks following the biopsy, Linda had breast surgery followed by radiation. Everybody at Arnprior Regional Health cared, said Linda. I couldn’t ask for anything better. When Reg Gatenby started to feel sick to his stomach one evening, he chalked it up to food poisoning. His wife decided to check in with Telehealth and the nurse asked him to call an ambulance. Reg, who was 61 at the time, arrived at Arnprior Regional Health’s Emergency Department where he was seen by Dr. Joseph Caytak. Through his exam, he could not determine what was wrong, so he ordered tests including an ultrasound the next morning. Reg was told he needed an MRI to investi...gate further. The next morning, Dr. Caytak called. He was curious and followed up on Reg’s case. Based on the ultrasound, Dr. Caytak told Reg he had a cancerous tumour on his kidney, and he could not afford to wait for an MRI. He needed a referral to a urologist and fast. Reg saw his family doctor that day and in November 2011 he had the cancerous tumour removed. Nine years later, he is still cancer free because of Dr. Caytak’s curiosity, care and good advice. I have such a debt of gratitude for Dr. Caytak it’s unbelievable, reflected Reg. Many Arnprior Regional Health patients are grateful for the exceptional care they receive locally care that saves lives. This is why we have launched the Angels Program for patients and families who would like to express their thanks and honour a doctor, nurse, or other healthcare professional with a gift to the Arnprior Regional Health Foundation.
