Coming full circle today! In June someone said to me "when one door closes another opens", and to be honest I did not believe it. Working on this project the last four months has given me hope for the future. It reaffirmed my passion and commitment to yoga practice.... As a Spiritual Being I know that coincidences are not always coincidences but messages. When I have difficulty sleeping at night I always read the walrus magazine and last night I was engrossed by a horrific story of sexual abuse in the Shambala Buddhist cult made famous by Pema Chodron. On a whim I googled the Sivananda organization I trained with and found the article I have shared here. The more I read the more sick I felt. The worst part? I wasn't surprised, wherever men ...are in a position of power, sexual abuse is given a space to hide. Full disclosure, I was given a private physiotherapy adjustment by Prahlad that was not inappropriate but demonstrates how this behaviour is condoned and normalized by this organization. Sexual abuse can happen to ANYONE. Looking back, there were red flags I'm disgusted, I'm demoralized and I've lost a spiritual practice that was deeply important to me. BUT I have an opportunity now to raise a fist in support of women who have been hurt by this organization and beyond. Effective immediately I will be removing any quotes or references I have used from Swami Vishnudevananda and the Sivananda organization. I'll be clearing my book shelves of their books and texts I will not advertise certifications given to me by the Sivananda organization. Dear Yoga Teachers, If you are not actively practicing all eight limbs of yoga you are NOT a yoga teacher. My guru told a story about when young practitioners would enter the yoga ashram. They had to master all the Yamas and Niyamas BEFORE practicing yoga asana. This ensured that they treated themselves with compassion before teaching others with compassion.... Racism. IS. YOUR. PROBLEM. The spirit of non-violence includes thoughts, words and most of all, acts of omission.
