Aromatherapy training with Cocoa Heaven 10.10.2020

Lockdown and COVID have wreaked havoc on our body systems and our mental health and wellbeing. Sharon at Cocoa Heaven has created a wonderful Aromatherapy Massage treatment for the month of July. Aromatherapy uses essential oils extracted from plants and herbs which can be inhaled or applied through the skin; aromas and oils from these natural sources have been shown in clinical studies to positively affect the body’s natural ability to balance and regulate itself. Aromatherapy calms the mind, alleviates stress, reduces anxiety and insomnia, and also restores feelings of well-being. Cocoa Heaven July Therapy Special is a 1.5 hour detox of the body mind and spirit, using oils proven to aid in detoxification. Book in early for this relaxing and rejuvenating treatment for only $89!

Grapefruit essential oil is one of the most popular citrus oils in aromatherapy, with a fresh and tangy fragrance that never fails to bring a welcome boost to the senses. Like all citrus fruits, the grapefruit belongs to the Rutaceae family, which are a large family of shrubs, trees and occasionally herbs. This botanical family is of great economic importance and provides a wide range of citrus crops to the world of commerce; grapefruit, lemons, limes, oranges and tangerines,... as well as some ornamental species. After the orange, the grapefruit is the second most important citrus fruit worldwide. Grapefruit essential oil is classed as a top note and has a very wide range of uses due to its uplifting, stimulating and cleansing properties. It is highly effective when used in massage blends to treat cellulite and the elimination of toxins because it helps to stimulate the lymphatic system. In skincare it can be used to help relieve oily and congested skin and has an all-round toning effect on dull skin. In common with most citrus oils, grapefruit has an antiseptic and antiviral action that can be used to protect against chills and colds. Vaporise it to help kill airborne bacteria and prevent germs from spreading throughout the family or at work. Grapefruit is a useful essential oil to help maintain concentration whilst driving. On the emotional system it excels with a cleansing and balancing effect that really lifts the spirits when feeling down, or heading for nervous exhaustion and depressive states. It is also effective at the first signs of stress, especially when blended with other emotionally stimulating oils such as sweet basil. Like all citrus essential oils grapefruit blends easily with many other oils, making a pleasing accord with basil, black pepper, cardamon (and other spice oils), coriander, cypress, geranium, juniper berry, lavender, neroli, palmarosa, petitgrain, pine and rosemary. Grapefruit is also useful in blends to take the sweet or heady edge off oils such as ylang ylang, jasmine, geranium, tuberose etc. It not only smells good when blended with jasmine, but it also helps when used to improve resolve and boost confidence. The mind-body connection When an aromatherapist treats a client for long-term stress, the essential oils they use in the treatment will cause various parts of the limbic system to spring into action, triggering the release of neurochemicals and hormones that will slow the heart rate, regulate blood pressure, and stimulate the immune system. This last action is very important, because stress causes adrenalin and cortisol to be produced by the body as part of the ‘fight or flig...ht’ response which is essential for survival, but damaging over a period of time because these chemicals suppresses the immune defences making us more susceptible to disease and illness. Modern science is investigating the interrelationship between psychology and fragrance by studying the emotions produced when odours activate the olfactory pathways leading to the limbic system. Research has now scientifically proven that essential oils can change mood, behaviour and productivity, and have determined which neurotransmitters were released to cause this effect. For example, serotonin produces a relaxing, soothing effect while certain endorphins inhibit pain and increase sexual arousal. The results of this type of research opens up a mind-boggling range of possibilities for future medicine, providing it is put to creative medicinal use. Not that it really matters to those of us who have worked in aromatherapy for any length of time, but it has been finally confirmed by scientists that essential oils can influence both the mind and the body, as we have always claimed. Perhaps it will now be a little easier for the sceptics to understand and accept why aromatherapy has been so popular and effective during the past 35 years. Geoff Lyth

Did you know? Quality and purity are not the same thing. Quality is determined by the variety of the plant, the agricultural methods used to grow it, the quality of the soil it was grown in, and expertise required to extract the oil.... Purity is the absence of adulteration or dilution in the oil.

Essential oils to help you sleep during COVID19 As you probably already know, there are several essential oils that can help you get a good night’s sleep, and there are lots of easy ways to use them. Choose the method that suits you best, but be sure to try them all in case one way works better than another for you. Bergamot, chamomile roman, clary sage, geranium, jasmine, sweet marjoram, nroli, sandalwood, ylang ylang and of course, lavender, are all essential oils that ca...n help you to drift into a peaceful and refreshing night’s sleep. One of the best and easiest ways to use these essential oils is in a warm bath just before you go to bed. Run a nice warm bath and add just 6 to 8 drops in total of your chosen essential oils to the bath water, and then agitate the water well or use a Bath Dispersant to disperse the oils evenly. To supercharge your treatment add some essential oils to an aromatherapy diffuser in your bedroom after getting out of the bath. By the time you have dried yourself off and you’re ready to slip between the sheets, the relaxing aroma of the essential oils will have filled your bedroom. Practice the deep-breathing exercise above and together with the oils it will help you drift into a peaceful, pandemic-free slumber. Alternatively, mix your chosen essential oils in a carrier oil and ask your partner to give you a mini-massage just before retiring to bed. The relaxing action of massage together with the essential oils encourages your body to relax, and slows down your heart rate, making it easier for you to drift into a deep, relaxing sleep. If your symptoms of insomnia persist you must consult with your doctor as soon as possible to determine the exact cause of your problem

Geranium Bourbon essential oil benefits Like all species of geranium essential oil, the Bourbon type is balancing and regulating to both body and mind; used in skin care it normalises sebum levels in dry or greasy skin and promotes cell renewal, whilst on the emotional system it stabilises anger, depression, irritability, nervous tension, PMS and all forms of roller-coaster emotions. It is also an effective adoptogen, which means that it strengthens the body’s immune, glandul...ar and nervous systems, thereby increasing resistance to stress. It is an absolutely indispensable oil. Geranium Bourbon essential oil makes a welcome addition to any blend since it adds a lovely floral note, without the usual floral oil cost! Many aromatherapists prefer to use this geranium oil since it blends so easily with a very wide range of other oils. Try mixing it with basil, bergamot, black pepper, cedarwoods Atlas and Virginian, chamomile Roman, citronella, clary sage, clove, jasmine, juniper berry, lavender, neroli, patchouli, peppermint, petitgrain, rose, rosemary, sandalwood, vetiver and all citrus oils. You may read in some aromatherapy books that geranium oil can cause contact dermatitis in hypersensitive individuals. As is often the case in poorly researched aromatherapy books, these reports appear to have based from the action of the plant, and not the essential oil. Good quality, unadulterated geranium oil from any origin is well tolerated by the skin when used at normal levels. Geoff Lyth
