We’ve closed the book on 2020, and what a year it’s been. Take a look: https://youtu.be/oXRIPBiUncw Arrowsmith Search and Rescue Society responded to a record number of calls, onboarded a dozen plus new recruits and increased our training and certifications. Together, we’ve been able to accomplish some amazing things. ... None of this is possible, without your support, so thank you for being part of the ASAR family. Here’s to you in 2021. Together we save lives by bringing the lost and injured home. #asar #bcsara #community

NSAR members spent the last three days searching for missing anglers Cody Martin and Tamara Sandulak in the Nanaimo Lakes area. Early in the third operational p...eriod, Cody was able to reach cell phone reception and placed a call to his mother. RCMP Air 8 was able to reach the cold and hungry pair within minutes, and airlifted them to waiting medics and family. A happy ending like no other! NSAR is so grateful for the support of not only our neighbouring SAR teams, but our local community as a whole. Mutual aid assistance was provided by Cowichan Search & Rescue, Ladysmith SAR, Arrowsmith Search And Rescue, Alberni Valley Rescue Squad, Comox Valley Search & Rescue, and Campbell River Volunteer Search and Rescue Society- with nearly 100 volunteers in attendance on Saturday. Mid Island ATV Club provided support searching on both Friday and Saturday, which allowed significantly more coverage in areas limited to off terrain vehicle travel. PEP Air provided air support with fixed wing aircraft for both Friday and Saturday’s search efforts, and BC RCMP Air 8 with air support for all operational periods. Coast Emergency Communications Association provided communications support for Friday and Saturday, and MosaicForests provided support with gate security, access to land for staging, and personnel at our staging area for further assistance. Gogo's Christmas Tree Farm also graciously opened their property to our teams for staging on Saturday, and was where Cody and Tamara were flown to reunite with their families. Tim Hortons provided hot coffee and Timbits for our volunteers, and Cobbs Bread Terminal Park provided delicious scones and treats. As you can see this list is immense, but it doesn’t even begin to underscore the human hours and effort that went into this coordinated effort. Fantastic work by all involved! We hope both Cody and Tamara enjoyed a warm night at home with Rex, and their relieved family members. #NSAR #BCSARA #mutualaid #RCMP #CASARA #CECA #bettertogether

CVSAR Responded to a Record Number of calls in 2020 Throughout 2020 British Columbia's Search and Rescue teams have responded to more than 1600 calls for assist...ance. While response volumes have been increasing over the past decade, with 2019 posting a record 1300 calls province wide, 2020 has seen a significant increase both in complex rescues and in large-scale multi-day operations. Sunday, evening marked the 69th call for Comox Valley Search and Rescue's team of highly-skilled and deeply committed Search and Rescue Specialists. The team was paged at 5:30 Sunday evening to assist Comox Valley RCMP in the search for a missing woman with dementia. CVSAR immediately requested Mutual Aid from both Campbell River Volunteer Search and Rescue Society and Arrowsmith Search And Rescue (Parksville/Qualicum) to assist in the substantive search effort. Along with resources from the RCMP, 38 searchers and two SAR K-9 units scoured wooded areas, trails and searched properties in hopes of locating the woman. The woman was located a significant distance from her residence and was transported to hospital for assessment. This search is typical of the calls received by Search and Rescue personnel across B.C. this year. Like last evening, these calls come most often when it is a dark and stormy night, when most people are at home, warm, safe and dry. Our searchers leave their families, their places of work, their dinners, their birthdays, their anniversaries out of a commitment to help others. They do so now with the added burden of operating under added COVID 19 protocols to ensure the safety of their teammates and those that they serve and ask nothing in return. With this year's record call volume, CVSAR has seen a significant increase in medical, technical and remote rescues as well as an increase in calls to assist those who have ventured out unprepared and ill-equipped for the terrain and activities that they are participating in. Our Team's hope for a New Year's resolution is for adventurers, young and old to enjoy all the natural wonders that our community and Province offers but to do so with the correct training, the physical fitness, the essential equipment and by leaving a detailed trip plan with a loved one in the event that an emergency occurs. For more information on Trip planning and preparedness we encourage everyone to visit BC AdventureSmart and to download the Trip Planning App today (Link in comments below).

Our Tracking Team was out the other day searching for sign, protecting sign, looking at track traps and discussing tracking strategies. #asar #bcsara #tracking #training

Arrowsmith Search and Rescue is proud to have two members going through the Rope Rescue Technician 1 Course. Over the last few weeks Bruce Wall and Denise Collins have been training with 16 other members from various SAR groups across Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. They have put in countless hours of theory and practice to get to this level and will continue with a strict training regimen taking them right through to certification. We are very proud of our very own Stuart Kirk and Cheryl Ann Kelly who successfully completed their Ground Search Team Leader Course and certification this weekend. Stuart and Cheryl Ann put in approximately 80 hours between the two of them doing course work and training to get ready for certification. They have both been with Arrowsmith Search and rescue for almost four years and have put in countless hours on task and in practice. We are all excited to have their leader...ship and experience, working with our Ground Search and Rescue Teams.
