Art Beatus | Hong Kong & Vancouver 03.11.2020

"Life, death, memories and nostalgia are recurrent themes in much of my work. As a vet, I see death on a daily basis, and have been moved to make work that shows my response to this. I am fascinated by how sleep and death may be confused with each other, particularly in a two dimensional image, which lacks the aspects of time and sound. I like to portray a narrative of human and animal interaction in my work that is ambiguous, and thus open to interpretation by the viewer." -... Wuon-Gean Ho London-based artist Wuon-Gean Ho's "Spirit" series of silkscreen prints portray images of a human figure in a closely bonded relationship to an animal. The artist has intentionally placed the animal in an ambiguous liminal space between sleep and death but what is also ambiguous is whether the animal is in a corporeal form or a spirit as the title of this work, "Dog Slung Spirit", raises this question. What is clear is how Ho translated her clinical work experience as a veterinarian into beautifully lyrical, and sometimes elegiac, works of art. Born in 1973 in Oxford, UK to Malaysian and Singaporean parents, Wuon-Gean Ho graduated with a BA in History of Art, and a professional licence as a veterinary surgeon from Cambridge University before accepting a Japanese Government Scholarship in 1998 to study woodblock printmaking in Japan. In between residencies in the US and Japan, Ho bases herself in London, balancing her time working as a veterinarian and working in her studio creating art and handmade artist books. Over the past two decades, Ho has been exhibiting her work in Europe, North America and Asia and has taken part in several artist residencies. Representing Hong Kong and Vancouver, artist, photographer, designer, and film director, Water Poon created a series of works which reflect and are inspired by his love for both cities. The mixed media works pictured, ‘Street Market Hong Kong’ and ‘Teng’s Market Vancouver’ with their washes of blue-grey, and splashes of brilliant colour, are beautiful depictions of the wet, overcast weather accented by culture and vibrancy so often experienced on both sides of the Pacifi...c. With that, rain falls in these two cities at this very time, a perfect moment to share the artist’s works with our friends. Street Market - Hong Kong is mixed media on paper, 57 x 69 centimetres, and is available through our Hong Kong gallery. Since moving to Vancouver about three decades ago, Shyh-Charng Lo, a self-taught artist, has developed a distinctly recognizable style of landscape painting using scenic vistas around his residence in the Point Grey area as both visual and emotional inspiration. Lo's paintings are often filled with ubiquitous mountains, sky, and water using a palette of muted and pastel colours and softly blended brushstrokes. While Lo titles his paintings according to the day that he begins ...work on the piece, it is the mountains and the water that are the artist's main preoccupation. According to Lo, Mountains and water have become a metaphor for a mixture of my childhood memories and a man's nostalgia. Born in Nagano, Japan and raised in Taiwan, Shyh-Charng Lo has a Bachelor and a Master of Arts in Anthropology and Archaeology as well as a Master of Museum Studies. After working at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto for about a decade, Lo moved to Vancouver to become a full-time a artist. Since then, he has exhibited extensively across the Pacific in Canada and throughout Asia as well as publishing several catalogues of his work. Lo's work can be found in public collections in Canada, USA, Singapore and Taiwan. This current and unprecedented time of social distancing has been undoubtedly difficult for many. However, there may be a few introverted individuals who find this temporary limit on social interaction a welcomed change. I : Contact 35 is part of a series of 50 photographic works by Victoria Kon based on her artbook, I, Volume 1, which is a humorous poke at the artist’s own anxieties with human interaction, especially eye contact with others. Funny enough, rather than a...voiding the anxiety-inducing object of gaze, these ocular portraits spotlight eye contact between the sitter and the audience and, presumably, between the sitter and the artist. Kon’s photographic prints on foamcore as well as copies of her handbound artbook (in a limited edition of 50) are available at Art Beatus (Vancouver). Born in the Greater Vancouver area to Chinese-Singaporean parents, Victoria Kon studied at Simon Fraser University with a Visual Arts Major and Print and Digital Publishing Minor. With a passion for design and publishing, Kon has collaborated with other artists and arts organizations such as Unit/Pitt Studios Publication and Publication Studio Vancouver. In addition, she has been awarded the SFU Service Award from Simon Fraser University School for the Contemporary Arts.
