While talking on the phone yesterday I was gazing at this scene and suddenly I realized I had created a mixed-media instillation. I created this image while reflecting on issues related to racism, inequality and injustice that have come to the fore during the pandemic. Later, I chanced upon this poem by Langston Hughes which speaks to the harmful effects -for all of us of deferral. It has taken a pandemic for white society to wake up to the status quo. "Montage of a Dream Deferred" What happens to a dream deferred?... Does it dry up / Like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore - /And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over - /Like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags / Like a heavy load.
