How I start a painting... I have tried sketching with charcoal or chalk, but somehow I always end up unhappy with the lines and just go for the paint! If something doesn’t feel right later, no worries.. it will get painted over and the mistake will just add some looseness. With my waterscapes, I take a LOT of time focusing on #composition and #value in my first layer so I know where I’m going. I do not grid out the image/canvas as I am always welcoming the piece to take on new life through my artistic eye.
