This is what inspired artbylocals.ca very earliest beginnings. A company based out of New Zealand that sells local products. I thought; 'Why not art?'.

I thought I needed a pastime, but so enjoyed a drawing course that art became much more. Sketching and drawing shifted quickly to printmaking and painting, first with watercolours, then acrylics and oils, and finally with mixed media. My background in science led to study and experimentation with each medium until I naturally gravitated to th...e versatility of acrylics as a base medium with mixed media elements. And science has naturally become a familiar and prevailing ally to my artistic practice. Science and art are never so far apart as our modern culture would make them seem. As an experimental artist, I see these opposing bodies of knowledge as deeply intertwingled. The aesthetics and science of composition, the theoretical and practical pursuit of a deep understanding of the interaction of textures, and the physics and chemistry of paint manipulation are three areas in which I am particularly involved. My work is inspired as often by a scientific principle or an experimental eureka moment as it is by an aesthetic vision. If I hadn’t become a visual artist, I might have become a mad scientist. Get to know Artbylocals.ca Premium Member: Bonita Gillespie. I have always loved to travel and the photographs of these adventures provides a continuous source of enjoyment. From my earliest days I wondered what if I could paint some of these beautiful sights? I loved the Realistic Style of Art as taught by the Old Masters but never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would be able to create such art. I’m not a very patient person and painting in this style may take week...s if not months to complete. I was in my forties when I took a few painting classes with an artist in my community and I was hooked! I would be able to prove the exception of the old adage you can teach an old dog new tricks. Along with the adventure travel brings, it often provides new visions for me to paint. The Maine in the Morning is a good example. We had risen early to carry on with our east coast vacation, zooming along the highway when all of a sudden we turned the corner and saw the magnificent forest view. The water glistened, the trees sparkled. What an opportunity! Savannah Window represents the lovely historical homes we saw while in Georgia. Many of the homes were built with bricks made by hand. If you look very close you can often see the finger prints on the individual bricks. Zambia River represents my love of the water. This photo is not one of my own but I loved how it represents the Zambia River. I was fortunate to cruise on this river when we were in Zambia a few years ago. What inspires me to continue to paint is the wide wonderful world we live in. I have a belief that we all need a reason to get up in the morning. What vision will I wake up to tomorrow that will inspire me to pick up my paint brush? My hope is that by viewing my Art you gain an admiration for this more traditional style of painting. I have originals, giclees and prints for sale. Feel free to enquire about other paintings. I’m also on Instagram and Facebook. Bonita Gillespie Sept 2020

Get to know Premium Member: Judy Schafers. A desire for depicting on canvas, the land that she was born in, has led Judy Leila Schafers on a personal 40 year journey of artistic discovery through the medium of acrylics. Her belief is that so much can be learned by just taking the time to 'look and see' and uses these observations as clues to inform her realistic painting style. Judy is an informally trained painter through years of solitary practise. She is always looking to ...learn more by remaining curious about the world, experimenting and applying advice from other artists through their critiques and reading magazines on the subject of art. She has also been very active in her local arts community by serving behind the scenes and on the boards of several non profit art societies and guilds. Judy lives and works on her family's busy grain farm west of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Here, she owns and operates her studio/gallery, hosts well attended art events and gives painting instruction. She has consistently won numerous art awards and her work is held in private collections on several continents.
