From each strand of hair on the dog's body to the human skin behind is immaculate. This piece is so realistic, and the details are fantastic. I am so proud of them and how they are constantly pushing herself to new limits.

Here’s another work in progress from one of my Young Artists at Home. This is an example of still life artwork. Her piece is already looking excellent! Even unfinished you can tell what the boots are made of, and she’s got great highlights and contrasts happening. Inspirational Teen Art!! I encourage everyone to try their hand at still life, and right now is the perfect opportunity. Pick an item (or a few) and set them up in a well-lit spot where they won’t be disturbed, an...d work on it whenever you get the chance. (Make sure your chair is always in the same place as well) It can be for any amount of time - a few minutes here and there, or as long as you want. Anything can qualify as still life. It can be a favourite stuffie, some fruit, army boots, or a combination of items. Really study your subjects, note size comparisons, light source, cast shadows, and most of all, have fun! See more

It was a very clever collaboration, the movement and animation made it interesting for the children and had an outstanding atmosphere. It was so beautiful, almost bringing tears to my eyes. sometime in fall program, we will learn and study Van Gogh's style.

Paint Pouring! Art for Life 4 Kids excited to be offering a few more awesome video classes so you and/or your families can get creative in the comfort of your own homes! :) This time round we have 2 paint pouring options.... These classes not only come with the how-to videos but also all the supplies needed - including the premixed paint kits. You can choose from either the blue themed option 9 Ep-1) or the more colourful pastel option ( Ep-2)...or you could even give both a try! Paint pouring classes have always been a hit at the studio, and we feel that by supplying the premixed paint kits, it can be just as enjoyable and a great activity for you to try at home. So much amazing feedback from students, one student said: "I didn't know I could paint such a pretty painting!" She said she went home and taught her whole family how to paint and she was so proud of herself. This made me feel so proud of her and this is truly what I teach the kids for, amazing moments and skills that you can share and create happiness with others. I feel like I am living a dream rather than working a job, all thanks to everyone!

GALLERY. Im so proud to share yet another wonderful piece of artwork from one of my students. Shes in high school and created this using coloured pencils. I love how shes achieved the super-soft looking fur with her details. Shes also made her light source obvious by colouring the front of the rabbit softly and with warm colours while slowly increasing the darker, cooler tones towards the back.... What a fantastic job! Gallery. Perfection. Precision. These are the two words that immediately came to mind when one of my art students sent me the photo of her most recent project. The finished drawing measures 8x10 and was done using coloured pencils. This type of artwork is called photo realism. Photo realism is where an artist uses a photo for reference and copies it as accurately as possible.... Isnt her attention to detail phenomenal?! See more

Gallery. This works-in-progress are both gifts for two of my students mothers. A young man in grade 9 is working on the gorgeous tulips in the vase (and this is only his second painting!) while a grade 12 student has been painting the lovely cardinals. It is wonderful to watch the two of them patiently creating their gifts and showing their love for their moms with their talents.... Outdoor Summer Art camp. Art for Life 4 Kids will be starting week-long day camps. Of course, this means we will be implementing a few changes to our classes. Hi Everyone. Ive recently had many parents asking how Art for Life 4 Kids is adapting to our changing times. Im happy to say that were working on some very exciting ideas! First, we will soon be offering Zoom Classes.... Zoom Classes. -There will be a number of age/grade appropriate projects to choose from. -These teaching videos will be live and will be available to download. (Therefore, the videos can be stopped and rewound if necessary, or paused to resume the lesson at a later time.) -For older students, I will be creating projects that follow the school curriculum. Their lessons will encourage them to think outside the box by trying new techniques and teaching new skills. -Along with the Zoom Classes, kits will be available for pickup at the studio. The kits will contain brushes, paints, canvases and/or high-quality multi-purpose artists paper, and any other supplies that each project requires. -From there, the students will follow up on another Zoom Class where I will review artwork and give feedback. (There will be multiple options of these classes to choose from.) Please follow us on Facebook or on our website for scheduling and dates. Once we have everything finalized, we will announce it here, as well as through emails.

Im so proud of this students initiative and wanted to share the poster that she created at this time. She has family back in the UK, and she wanted to thank the NHS workers over there, as well as thank Frontline workers all around the world. What a beautiful message, and what beautiful artwork. Young Artists at Home. Today we are sketching a cute little Piggy, in this drawing, he or she will be sitting staring back at its beautiful creators. Stay tuned for the next one, it will include Juno the West Highland Terrier.

The lion that I shared a few weeks ago as a work in progress is now complete! Isnt it gorgeous?! Ive had a number of students showing interest in drawing animals and asking for advice before they start. My biggest piece of advice is the importance of eyes. The eyes truly are the window to the soul. To really make a portrait work, the eyes need to be correct and accurate.... So...study eyes, then practice, practice, practice and practice some more. Fill pages (or screens) just with eyes. No matter what animal youd like to draw, research its eyes first. Note colours, pupil shapes, shadows and highlights. Eyes are extremely reflective, and if you can get the details in the eyes correct, your portrait will really come to life! See more

I always tell my students to think of their light source when working on a piece of art. What direction is it coming from? Is it bright, or subtle? Lighting is important because it gives an image added depth and volume...basically it helps to create a 3 dimensional look. It will also show smoothness or texture (like the bark in this painting.) The Young Artist at Home who painted this impressive Baby Groot added a sun over the characters right shoulder. However, even if she hadnt included it, we would still know that the light source was coming from that direction. That is because the combination of highlights and and shadows on the body, along with the shine in those deep, soulful eyes give the illusion of the light source. Remember, without light, we cannot see!

Happy mothers day everyone! One of my art students painted this gorgeous watercolour. I feel its the perfect piece to wish all of you wonderful Moms a very happy Mothers Day. (Because we all know that a Mother is like a flower, each one is beautiful and unique!)

Hi Soo,... I wanted to share with you the great news that Jocelyn has been accepted into all four of her choices for University for September 2020. She has decided to attend Queens University for the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program which allows you to study painting, print media, sculpture and new media. It is hard to believe that the girl you have been teaching and mentoring for over ten years has been accepted into Queens which only accepts between 20-30 students a year. If you look over her work you can see how she has improved since she first started taking classes with you. All I can say is a huge Thank You! for all the guidance you have provided to Jocelyn for over ten years. Love you, Darc

Another one of my Young Artists at Home shared this gorgeous work in progress. She is working with coloured pencils, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to share a few tips and techniques. (Because while you may not have artist quality paints at home, you probably have coloured pencils!) First of all, I like to have a few sheets of plain paper under my artwork - this gives smoother colouring results. Keep your coloured pencils nicely sharpened for details, but I f...ind that rounder edges are better for colouring in large areas. When colouring, start with light, even strokes. If your subject has fur (like the attached piece of artwork) remember to go in the direction of the fur growth. Otherwise, colour in with a soft, circular motion. When you start lightly, it is easier to go darker where needed, and it also makes it easier to add layers and blend other colours. Blending gives depth to the piece of art, and makes the colours much more vibrant. Happy colouring everyone! See more

Young Artists at Home Over the next while, I will start sharing some posts about what I call Young Artists at Home. Im proud to say that a number of my students have taken the initiative to work on their own artwork on their own time. They have found this is a great way to beat boredom and focus on something positive. I have been giving critiques to any of them that send me photos and have also been encouraging them to keep it up!... Its great to see that with the training theyve had so far, they have the confidence to do this on their own :) See more

Happy with the results for the wooden board piece. It's the perfect time to paint, peaceful and quiet with so much time.

Thinking 3 dimensionally. We recently tried out sculpting at Art for Life 4 Kids! It was a wonderful learning experience for the students and a great way to get them thinking 3 dimensionally. They began with a character design class where each student created their own character. They drew a front, back and profile view of what their character would look like.... Once everyone was happy with their designs, we hosted the sculpting class. I must say that the end results were quite impressive! Register now at [email protected]

In Progress Parrot Artwork Coloured pencils can be a challenging medium to use, but once theyre mastered, the results can be beautiful - as this high school student is proving. Im absolutely thrilled with how well her parrot piece is progressing! Her attention to detail is simply amazing. It has taken a lot of careful planning, time and effort on her part. Theres a lot of blending and layering with coloured pencils, and while they are pencils, they are not easily erased... since they are oil based. Im happy to see that her determination and patience is paying off...its going to be quite a stunning piece once it is finished! Register now at [email protected]

Its hard to believe, but this adorable kitten is actually a coloured pencil drawing! The artist has done a wonderful job of blending and softening the colours around the outside of the kitten, and made sure her pencil strokes always followed the direction of the hair growth. The subtle greys of the fur and soft background colour are what makes those beautiful green eyes really stand out. Fantastic job!... Happy Friday Everyone!! Register now at [email protected]

Any piece of artwork that is monochromatic such as this wonderful horse painting is always a challenge. Thats because, while it is the easiest palette, you must get the shading, tones and contrasts just right, and it can be difficult to highlight the most important elements. However, I think this high school student did an amazing job overcoming all the above mentioned obstacles, dont you agree?!

I really have to share this students artwork again and tell a bit of her story. Its been exciting to watch her develop her own individual style, as well as see her passion for art continue to grow over the years. Shes in grade 11 this year, but is so determined to attend OCAD University in Toronto in 2 years time, that she requested (and was granted) a portfolio review at this prestigious art university! They reviewed her portfolio, gave her some constructive criticism and... told her that they would be happy to have her once shes graduated from grade 12!
