Did you know that AGA Education now offers online school programs? We dove into the virtual classroom to make children’s learning experiences just as enriching as if they were in the Gallery! Educators can easily book their chosen program online: https://bit.ly/39nuUMB Parents, be sure to inquire at your child’s school about incorporating AGA programming! AGA digital school programs wouldn’t be possible without the support of the EPCOR Canada Heart + Soul fund that allows us to fulfill our mission of making art accessible for all.

Point #152: The effect of the design of your city on food miles for fresh produce. (An ongoing exploration into Michael Sorkin’s essay, Two-Hundred and Fifty Things an Architect Should Know presented by the Poole Centre of Design) The design practice Future farmers, a self-described collaborative of artists, designers, architects...and farmers with a common interest in creating frameworks of exchange... describes multi-year project Flatbread Society that calls attention... to an urban renewal on a port in Oslo, Norway. With a lens on ancient grains, the Flatbread Society worked with farmers, bakers and oven-builders. A temporary bakehouse held three ovens for baking bread; from muufo, to bani, to naan, among others. The temporary structure was in contrast to the cultural buildings relocating to the waterfront. In front of the Snohetta-designed Norwegian Opera and Ballet building with an activated public roof, Flatbread Society featured a walking oven. Exit the museum to the scent of baking bread, as the canoe walks by. The objective was to create an openness, a sense of surprise that jolted viewers outside of one’s comfort zone, allowing for a readiness for what new potential the site might become. Listen to our conversation with Futurefarmers: https://www.youraga.ca//our-sp/poole-centre-design/250-aga #250AGA Image: Flatbread Society Canoe Oven, Max McClure, 2015.

Ecuadorian architect and urban-environmental planner Ana María Durán Calisto speaks with the AGA and Poole Centre of Design about her research into the fragile ecosystem of the Amazon basin. Our conversation weaves from Pre-Columbian cities and learning from ancestral knowledge to the patterns of the city, the forest and agriculture. What can designers do in rethinking colonial urbanist practices? In researching the Amazon, Durán Calisto reveals observations of making: from t...he ritual of making traditional food such as Maito, to weaving a house informed by the weaving of a basket. I love how the same logic threads into everything, she said.
