We are proud to present Dream Space: Youth Art in the Time of COVID-19, the second online survey of artwork contributed by Hamilton secondary school art students, and collaboratively built between young Hamilton Artists, their teachers with Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, and the AGH. Dream Space is often understood as a mysterious landscape that exists beyond the limits of our physical world. In our current state of social limitations, the Dream Space has arguably... become a more essential, more frequently visited sphere by all of us. Click here to view the amazing work created by these young artists in our community: https://www.artgalleryofhamilton.com/exhibition/dream-space/

Even though we can't see you in-person right now at the Gallery, we hope you enjoy this behind-the-scenes time-lapse video capturing the multi-day process of the painting of our stunning new lobby exhibition, Masquerade by lestercolomaart. Also, check out our newest AGH Magazine article for an interview with the artist. Enjoy! https://www.artgalleryofhamilton.com/the-making-of-lester-/ ........ Masquerade, 2020, is designed specifically for the AGH lobby. A lush, rich and wholly engaging portrait, its meaning is equally abundant and involving. On the one hand we experience a dramatic, over life-size figure seemingly overwhelmed by the vivid flora that occupies half the composition. But the sheer beauty and splendor of the mural belies a much more complex and timely origin story. The plants serve as an organic representation of the subject’s mental health. Each leaf can be an issue that a person may struggle with. Our mental health is complex, delicate, and organic, with personal, political, cultural, and social issues often entangled. With conditions interwoven and often difficult to separate, it can be challenging to view each part on its own. To see the forest for the trees. And this is often overwhelming, much as the sitter is here being subsumed. Yet despite this chaotic predicament, she steadfastly holds her gaze, and ours. She has control, and power.

The AGH is deeply saddened by the passing of P. Mansaram (1934-2020), a steadfast figure in the Hamilton artist community since he arrived to Canada and settled in Burlington over fifty years ago. A prolific and influential artist who worked in collage, print, painting, textiles and mixed media, he was primarily concerned with how images convey meaning, and was a good friend of Marshal McLuhan, who coined the medium is the message. Mansaram taught art at various schools in ...the Hamilton area. Further details of his life and work appear on the Building Cultural Legacies website: https://buildingculturallegacies.ca/artist/p-mansaram/ Mansaram’s work Aldershot Neighbourhood (2000), is a large mixed media collage that depicts the surroundings outside his longtime Burlington home, plus icons of his Indian heritage. This work is currently on display in the AGH lobby, which is always Free Admission. We welcome visitors to share their memories of this celebrated local artist. A landmark solo exhibition, P. Mansaram: The Medium is the Medium is the Medium is on view now until January 3, 2021 at the Art Gallery of Burlington. .....
