CORRECTED - more info WEST LUTHER TOWNSHIP OFFICE courtesy Wayne & Dianne Orr... This envelope is a neat one. I don't understand the route travelled. I almost wonder if I've cross fired two envelopes, but, that really won't impede our ability to enjoy this little journey. Firstly, note that the West Luther Township office is in Stonywood! Prior to that the township office was in Egerton! Both little known locations (marked today by a former school at Stonywood and an abandoned church at Egerton). It's a registered letter, thus lots of postage. The letter is from the year 1900. Stonywood - which is a fairly rare postmark. The letter goes to Monck. When we flip the envelope over, we have Monck (another uncommon postmark). Mount Forest (an older version), Arthur (full ring - so older) and an uncommon Orangeville & Teeswater train postmark. (I'm pretty sure this is train). Finally, we'll take a moment to read the news of the day. WEST LUTHER TOWNSHIP OFFICE POSTMARKS DITCH SPECIFICATIONS James Orr Esq. Sir, I have received the Engineers Award, plan, etc. of a ditch required by the Council on the 10th & 11th concession and I herewith send you a copy of the portion awarded you to construct and your portion of the fees and charges in connection therewith. James Orr owner of the W-1/2 of Lot No. 7 Con. 10 shall commence at stake marked (40), and shall open up a ditch or drain of the dimensions etc set forth on the annexed schedule and according to the specifications, with seventyfour degrees East 300 feet to stake marked 49, all of which according to my estimate thereof will amount in value to $19.00, and I fix the time for the performance of such work on the first day of October A.D. 1901 at furthest. James Orr's portion of the costs of award etc. is $1.15. Specifications 1 No timber or brick to be left within 10 feet on either side of the centre line of ditch and the full top width of the ditch shall be grubbed. 2 No dirt thrown out of the ditch shall be left within 2-1/2 feet from the edge of the ditch. 3 Slope of sides of ditch shall be one foot to one foot

CHAUTAQUAS from the Ara Church-Taylor Collection Chautaquas (Drama Club) were a very popular form of entertainment in our community from the early 1900's until about 1940. This group of four photos is from 1905 to 1924, but we don't have details. The pictures were donated to the Arthur and Area Historical Society by Blake Taylor. ... We are very fortunate that these Chautaquas were regularly photographed by a professional. It's not overly surprising though, as so much effort was made with the costumes. These groups worked hard. There performances were often held in the 'Town Hall' today known as the Senior Citizens Hall. Thus, although there may not be too many copies of a photography, they do exist! There are over a dozen of these photos at historical!

HISTORY OF MARYBOROUGH TOWNSHIP 1851-1976 S.S. #10 (UPPER 12TH) Page 29 The first S.S. 10 was built in 1855. It was a frame building. By 1876 this school was replaced by a new brick building. By 1876 this school was replaced by a new brick building. Wm. McKay received the contract to build the school for $626. The trustees at this time were Wm. Falconer, Richard Fotheringham and John Corbett. With all furnishings the school was valued at $1200. In 1889 David Corbett built a w...oodshed at the back of the brick building. He used materials from the original old frame school. By 1896 public exams were held in December with two trustees, five visiting teachers and fifteen visitors present. In 1905 Mr. R.B. Galbraith was inspector to be succeeded in 1930 by Mr. G.A. Gibson. In 1932 Mr. Nelson was appointed to this position. Over the years the usual improvements of hydro, washrooms, oil burner to replace the box wood stove and outdoor play equipment were added. Like most other schools, S.S. 10 participated in School Improvement Competitions, Maryborough Fall Fair and music festivals. They had the usual Christmas concerts which was one highlight of the public school program throughout the township and eagerly looked forward to, by students and parents alike. In December 1963, S.S. 10 closed its doors and the students were moved to the new Township School Area units at Rothsay, Moorefield and Wyandot. For several years the school building was vacant. It has been partially converted to a private dwelling and has changed ownership many times in the past ten years. At present, 1976, it is once again being dismantled inside and private home will be completed. Teachers of S.S. 10 include Jan McArthur, John Curtiss, Wm. Dow, Wm. McCullough, Alex, Allan, H. Saigeon, Wm. ARTHUR PIZZA EXPANDING BUSINESS BETTER PARKING AND SEATING by Anne Bryan Enterprise News... December 1987 After two months in its new site Arthur's traditional pizza shop is seeing a good increase in traffic. The newer, larger site, which includes better parking and seating facilities, is the main reason for the increase Wesley Haramule, operator said, although he admits 90 per cent of the business is still take out. Arthur Pizza, formerly Thee Cellar II, has settled into the former Dixon Lumber site at 171 Smith Street. The fast food restaurant continues to serve as a meeting place for Arthur's families and youth more so now that comfortable and plentiful seating is available. 'Family and youth' have a special place at the shop not only as customers. Almost all of the Haramule family work at the business. The reason is the family can work together and be together, Yvonna Haramule, Wesley's wife said. Family life is very important to the Haramule's. Yvonna admits she also enjoys being able to work with and keep a watch on the youngsters in the shop. Those who are not blood members of the family quickly become adopted. Yvonna said the atmosphere is very good in the shop and everyone gets along as family. It makes you feel younger, work with the students, she laughed. Wes and Yvonna's immediate family consists of: Yvonne 14, Wesley 13, Helen 11-1/2, Tommy 10, Jacob 8, Johnny 4-1/2 and Adam 2. All have been residents of Arthur for the past year. Prior to the move to Arthur, the Haramule's lived in Mount Forest for three years. During the years in Mount Forest, they owned and operated Thee Cellar II. The decision to settle for a business in Arthur came when the couple realized that all similar type businesses were already operating in Mount Forest. Thee Cellar II came up for sale so the couple purchased the operation. The Haramule's have spent a great deal of time in the public service industry. They operated a motel for six years in the United States before moving to Canada. The Haramule's immigrated from Czechoslovakia, originally. But, Arthur Pizza, is not your typical prefabricated, ready-in-five-minutes pizza shop. Arthur Pizza sells only pizza made from fresh dough. Nothing is partially cooked or frozen to shorten the time for preparation. Wes noted many customers cannot understand why a pizza take 15 minutes cooking time. Most are used to the prefabricated pizza. We are traditional, he said. Pizza is not the only item on the menu. Arthur Pizza, which serves a 10 mile radius, has a large list of items a list which will soon be growing. Wes said soup items may be initiated in the new year. The panzerotti item is improved, he added. Arthur Pizza opens its doors at lunch time and closes at 11:00 p.m. Weekdays. On Fridays the shop is open until 12:00 a.m. The new site now opens Saturday afternoon. Wes advises customers to call a half hour earlier when ordering pizza.

JOHNNY PANIC & THE PUSHBUTTONS by Jeff McKee Johnny Panic & the Pushbuttons, an Arthur band, was at the top of it's game in the mid-late 1980s. A retirement by the group became a sabbatical, and they returned to play in the 90's. Again the group retired, only to return in the 2000's to play annually in the 'Friends for Life' concerts. They have been retired, yet again, for a few years right now, but were planning to play in the 'Front Porch' series for the 'Get In Touch for H...utch' this past summer, only to have COVID result in the program being cancelled. This rock 'n roll group succeeded in playing popular songs and bringing excellent enthusiasm to the stage. I had fun taking this photo one night at practice, in what is now the office to Trevor Roberts Auto Repair. Left to right: John Redburn & Dave Morrow. ALMA TRAIN WRECK A couple of photos in the files here of the 'Alma Train Wreck'. Does anyone know this story? We would enjoy hearing it. ... In this day and age, we can hardly imagine a 'train wreck', let alone having one in our community. However, a century ago, most every community endured a train wreck. They came varying degrees or terrible. We have our photos in our files of one in Arthur. It was low speed, with a few tracks pushed around. However, not all were low speed. They dangerous for everyone involved. The conductors were always in danger of being burnt, in addition to being at the forefront of the wreckage. This Alma train wreck appears to have been caused by a washout. We cross our fingers that there's an expert in the crowd!
