Where the wild things are: Making snow monsters and looking for monster faces in the nature around us! We made fun-foam face parts hot glued to wood skewers (cut in half), but cardboard face parts hot glued to strong sticks would work too! We also used spray bottles with a food colouring/water mixture as paint. We sculpted monsters first, and then explored the nature around us to find hidden faces in the trees and rocks! #arthurschoolofart #snowartproject #snowart #kidswinterart #athomeartprojects #artprojectsforkids #simplematerials #makerkids #natureart #getoutside @ Arthur School of Art

Snow painting! We used spray bottles with water and liquid food colouring to learn about colour mixing and how different nozzles can create a fine mist or a solid stream of colour! We also made snow cones with Kool-Aid and we are going to experiment with the various colours and flavours! This is a messy project so brace yourself for colourful mitts, snow and pretty much anything else they can find outside!... #arthurschoolofart #paintingonsnow #winterart #winterprojectsforkids #colourmixing #colourtheoryforkids #kidsspraypainting #kidsart #snowcones #projectsforkids #outdoorart #messyartprojects #artteachersofinstagram @ Arthur School of Art

Comic #1 drawn, inked and coloured, and comic #2 in early days of pencil drawing stage! Henry (age 8) has been totally inspired by Dogman author Dav Pilkey, so he is making these comics all on his own! I suggested working large scale ( like the pros) and then I will photograph it and print it. He learned about pencil drawing versus inking, and also the patience needed to do both. He’s using good quality micron pens to ink and a variety of markers for colouring. He is learnin...g how much work goes into writing and illustrating a book, and he heads into the studio to work a little each day! #arthurschoolofart #davpilkey #davpilkeybooks #davpilkeyinspired #dogman #robotcomics #kidscomics #selfdirectedart #kidsmakingart #kidsart #artathome @ Arthur School of Art

Fireworks to celebrate a new year! This art project is great for all ages, is process based and uses simple materials! Materials: white paper, washable markers, paintbrush, snow 1. Draw multi colour fireworks shapes on paper. Younger artists might find it easier to make a dot and then turn the page to add lines all around the dot. We made a couple collaborative drawings as well! 2. Colour the background around the shapes in black marker and fill in. ... Note* Very young artists might want to stop at this step. The next step adding the snow to the drawing can be a difficult concept, so I suggest letting young artists watch what happens to someone else’s drawing first Watching art is also an important part of making art! 3. Sprinkle snow over the drawing and then bring it inside to melt. We used cookie sheets and stones to hold our drawings. They can also be placed facedown in the snow instead of sprinkled. 4.Place wet drawing on a towel to melt and dry. The towel might absorb some marker so be sure to use older ones. 5. When dry, the drawing will look very different. Re-draw the fireworks with marker on top of the originals, and also add in new ones! This step is all about layering to create depth so add lots of shapes and colour! We added circles of yellow around our fireworks. 6. Use a paintbrush and water to make circles around the fireworks, letting the markers blend together to create the appearance of smoke dissipating. Use the brush gently and be sure not to over scrub the delicate wet paper. This is a fun project to teach kids about finding and losing parts of their drawings, layering to create depth, and exploring materials and methods! Extreme crafting for extreme boredom! This is an inexpensive and fun project that lets kids play with random bits of stuff - always a great way to pass time and get creative! My 8 year old boys and I began this playhouse last week and finished this week. We used bits from our scrap bins where we keep pieces of recycling, wood, fabric, beads and paper. We worked together and sometimes on our own, to build the house and all the stuff in it. I helped with some of the tricky par...ts but they were able to design, construct, cut paper, glue and just fiddle around with lots of different materials. We learned about architecture, design and how buildings are made. We also learned about patience and appreciating each other’s strengths. I helped with the hot glue gun for tiny bits (the first rule of hot glue is that you will get burned by the hot glue). We printed off a brick pattern for the exterior but we could also have painted it. This is a great craft to use up some of the holiday wrapping, ribbons, cardboard, plastic and paper bits hanging around! #arthurschoolofart #playhouse #kidscrafts #cardboard #cardboardhouses #dollhouse #diydollhouse #craftingwithrecycling #postholidayboredom #keepingkidsbusyathome #creativebrains #workingtogether #artandpatience #dollfurniture #minifurniture #kidsart #artteachersofinstagram #architectureforkids #designforkids #craftbits #paperhouses @ Arthur School of Art
