There are unique ethical challenges in our treatment of AI and systems which are human-like in appearance, expression or cognition, Ron Chrisley noted in his co...mpelling talk today through Stanford’s HAI, Against Ethical Robots. Chrisley notes that the complacent view holds that Since current and near-future AI systems don’t have feelings, it isn’t unethical to mutilate, kick or dismember them. However, Chrisley argues that complacency is not an option. He says, if we think of dolls, which have a human-like physical appearance, we could consider it at best grossly inappropriate to willfully and sadistically dismember a humanoid doll (as opposed to, say a toy car) on stage in front of children. I found it interesting that at least some of the ethical dilemma remains even without agency or emotion on the part of the AI.
