A fatal landslide at an artisanal #gold mine site in Central #Sulawesi, #Indonesia on Wednesday, 25 February 2021 has highlighted the need for a clear pathway to legalization for the sector in Indonesia, and world-wide. The AGC with local partner Yayasan Emas Artisanal Indonesia is currently executing the Canada’s International Development Global Affairs Canada funded project, Program Emas Rakyat Sejahtera in North Sulawesi, and aims to help formalize (legalize) and professionalize artisanal mining operations and, in doing so, improve miner health and safety practises to avoid future tragedies like the one in Buranga Village. The Philippines is now the 123rd country to ratify the Minamata Convention on Mercury! On July 8, the Philippines ratified the Minamata Convention on Mercurya... global treaty to protect human, health, and the environment from the adverse effects of mercury. More than the signing and ratification of this treaty, mercury-reduction still needs to be brought to national legislation and implementation in conformance with the treaty obligations. To support this, the #planetGOLD project is working towards eliminating mercury in the ASGM sector which is the largest source of air and water mercury pollution. https://bit.ly/32lwvAJ #MakeMercuryHistory
