Apart from benefiting physical health, Sudarshan Kriya (SKY) breathing improves concentration and helps us be in the present moment. If you observe, the mind vacillates between the past and the future. We are either angry about the past or anxious about the future. Sudarshan Kriya helps bring the mind to the present. When the mind is calm, we are able to perceive things better. When the mind is disturbed, our perception is also disturbed. In daily life, we come across situati...ons that can be challenging and require us to make effective decisions. These situations often influence the state of our mind so much so that we cannot make effective decisions. Neither the events in life nor the states of our mind happen with our permission. In fact, life events and our states of mind often occur in direct defiance of our wishes. Calm your mind with Sudarshan Kriya. If you have already learned the technique on a Happiness Program, join our free weekly online group sessions with a live instructor who can guide you through your breathing practice, as well as answer any questions you might have. To understand what is meditation, we have to also understand what is not meditation. Concentration is not meditation. The ability to concentrate is an outcome of a good meditation practice, but concentration itself is not meditation. Engaging in an activity you like (for example, running, singing, drawing, etc.) is not meditation. Deep sleep is also not meditation. Giving up everything and becoming a recluse is not meditation either. To find out what is meditation, join the o...nline Art of Meditation course from March 6th-8th. Meditation is the delicate and effortless art of doing nothing. It is the skill to take a deep rest while being conscious and alert. Beyond all the chatter and noise in our mind, there is a silent, peaceful, blissful, beautiful space that exists in all of us, a place that is intact and unbroken. Turning our attention to this silent chamber is meditation. This silence cleanses the mind, giving it a much-needed rest, and makes room for better perceptions and new ways of looking... at life and its challenges. What are Bhakti Sutras? Life springs from love the origin is love and life seeks love. The goal of life is also love, and in between, life is sustained by love. There is not a single creature or living entity on this planet that has not known love or is devoid of love. Since time immemorial Narada and Bhakti (devotion) have been synonymous. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar gives an inspiring discourse on the Bhakti Sutras of Narada Aphorisms of Love. Join our weekly online group sessions with a live instructor. Find out more today. What’s the sensation associated with happiness? It’s a sense of expansion. When someone gives us a compliment, we have a feeling or sense of expansion. Contrary to that, when insulted, you have a feeling of shrinking. In the yogic sciences, it’s said that this thing that expands and contracts is your own consciousness, your mind. So what you can do to make your mind expand is listen to music and dance, or spend time with a joyful, happy group of children. When older people c...onnect to younger children, they feel uplifted. They don’t feel low energy. Third thing you can do to make your mind expand is meditation. In 2017, suicide was the ninth leading cause of death overall in Canada. An article about suicide rates among men cites studies showing that prolonged practices (36 months) of hatha yoga can reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) levels, and increase serotonin (the happy hormone) in the brain. Leaders in diverse fields have been putting their heads together to address suicide issues. ... On September 10th, World Suicide Prevention Day, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the founder of the Art of Living Foundation, stated that We need to assure our younger generation about human values and humanness. Everybody’s there for them. What helps is when you raise your prana level. When the prana, or life energy, is down, that’s when people get depressed and suicidal. Exercise raises it to some extent, but also brings tiredness and is laborious, or boring. When people feel lazy, one can come out of lethargy by doing yoga. Yoga and meditation definitely make a difference and music plays a role. When the life force or prana is high, suicidal thoughts don’t occur.
