To understand what is meditation, we have to also understand what is not meditation. Concentration is not meditation. The ability to concentrate is an outcome of a good meditation practice, but concentration itself is not meditation. Engaging in an activity you like (for example, running, singing, drawing, etc.) is not meditation. Deep sleep is also not meditation. An article about suicide rates among men cites studies showing that prolonged practices (36 months) of hatha yoga can reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) levels, and increase serotonin (the happy hormone) in the brain.
