Hi friends. DooDash here. Right now there are a lot of really scary things happening in the world. It’s important to talk to kids about those things, their (and... your) feelings about them, and what you as a family can do to help. Just because you might not have all the answers to their questions, doesn’t mean you should avoid having the conversation. If nothing else, kids will notice if you are feeling scared, or confused, or stressed, or angry, or sad. They will start to feel the same, but they won’t know why. They might not have the context or the language for it, but they will feel the feelings. You can help them. Name race and racism. Don’t raise your children to be colorblind, teach them to see skin color and understand that the world treats people differently because of it, but they shouldn’t. Teach them how to recognize prejudice in themselves and others, and how to confront and resist it. Teach them that violence is rarely the answer, but it is the language of the hurting and the unheard. Black parents have to talk to their children about these issues everyday, to keep them safe. Non-BIPOC parents, you can help. By talking to your kids you will raise allies and activists, people who use their privilege and are unafraid to speak up, and you’ll begin to dismantle the dangers people of color face from within. Teach them not just to not be racist, but to be anti-racist. That is the only way this gets better. Here are some resources on how to discuss race, prejudice, and unrest with your children: https://www.gse.upenn.edu//talking-children-after-racial-i https://www.embracerace.org//something-happened-in-our-tow https://www.embracerace.org/res/young-kids-racial-injustice https://www.patreon.com/theconsciouskid https://socialjusticebooks.org/guide-for-selecting-anti-bi/ #Charleston #GeorgeFloyd #AhmaudArbery #TonyMcCade #BreonnaTaylor #BlackLivesMatter #AmyCooper #Parenting #MuseumAtHome #ChildrensMuseumsAtHome #MuseumFromHome #museumsarenotneutral
