New year, same Culture Days energy. The arts emerged as a lifeline of joy, hope, and reprieve needed to make it through this past year. Collectively, we’re imagining what a post-pandemic world could look like and how we can each contribute to that picture being brighter. Through that lens, Culture Days has chosen RE:IMAGINE as the very apt 2021 theme. The annual celebration of arts, culture and a life enriched by both will again roll out as a 4-week celebration across Canada from September 24 through October 24, 2021. RE:IMAGINE signals a positive turning pointthe commitment to building tangible change into the future of art and culture. Visit CultureDays.ca and view our Participation Guide and FAQ to learn more about the festival and how to get involved. https://culturedays.ca/en/resources/participation-guide

Arts Milton is excited to present a new program in 2021 - "Crafting Culture." https://artsmilton.com/programs/crafting-culture This four week series of live wor...kshop-style presentations will be led by local creators. Our facilitators will demonstrate a how-to based on the history of their own culture, whether it's textiles, craft, visual arts, or culinary creations. These presentations can be found here on the Arts Milton Facebook page on SUNDAYS at 3 PM. First up this Sunday, January 10th is Chef Garfield Houstan from Open Appetite Catering. Chef Garfield will host a cooking show in which he cooks the classic Jamaican dish Ackee and Salt Fish from start to finish! Want to follow along in your own kitchen? Email [email protected] for the recipe and ingredients in advance, or afterwards! 'Ackee and saltfish isn’t just Jamaica’s national dish; it’s also a favorite breakfast or brunch for Jamaicans everywhere. Ackee is a savory fruit with thick red skin; when unripe, the skin forms a sealed pod, but when the fruit ripens, the skin opens up to reveal a beautiful petal-like shape containing three or four yellow pegs topped with a single black seed. Native to West Africa, ackee came to Jamaica along with enslaved Africans, who used its seed as a talisman. Salt cod, known as saltfish in the islands, is a staple in the cuisine of almost all Caribbean islands as it formed part of the Triangular Trade between Europe, Africa and the Americas, tying its history to that of the African slave trade, slavery on Caribbean plantations, and the production and trade of West Indian sugar and rum. What makes this dish original and surprising is how well these two very different ingredients combine to create a meal that is both subtle and bold."
