Name of painting: ThunderBird and Guiding Spirits This piece is about Animikii (ThunderBird) who is a creature that causes lightning as depicted in this painting. It is said the lightning bolts are the result from the Great Bird blinking its eyes. The thunder is caused when Animikii flaps its wings. ... The ThunderBird motif figures prominently in almost all ceremonies and is/was the symbol that unifies/unified the Anishinaabe. It is an old tradition to offer tobacco to ThunderBird. Prayers are also offered to the Great Bird asking it to go easy on the Anishinaabe when the storm comes to cleanse the earth. This work also features Seven Guiding Spirits. The number Seven is very important in our culture. Finally, the lightning strike reflection connects the sky and the water in this work. The Guiding Spirits also are connected to the lighting.
