Today’s LOUIE SCOW Sumbus - known also by his English name of Louie Henry Scow- is a Kwakwaka’wakw traditional dancer, cedar and jewelry carver, and cultural teacher from Gyas’dum’s Nation on Gilford Island, BC. Sumbus has created plaques, rattles, masks, drums, and cedar weavings based on and is applying over 40 years of traditional work into three-dimensional silver jewelry designs. I am from Gilford Island Gyasdum’s Nation, part of ...the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation. Inspired at a young age by my step-dad, Danny Quatell, to create art and explore my carving, through the years I have learned more of my culture, joining a Vancouver-based Kwakwaka’wakw urban dance group as a drummer and singer. I enjoy working with culturally diverse schools in Surrey to share stories and art with children. Seeing children embrace and accomplish projects I put before them is very inspiring. I have had the opportunity to teach West Coast traditions such as carving, drum making, and cedar weaving with many promment organizations. The technical and theoretical content of the Northwest Coast Jewellery Arts program at the Native Education College has provided me with the background to complement my traditional teachings and years of carving experience. I look forward to continuing to express myself, my personality and any stories through silver and gold jewelry.
