The IoT Station The internet as we know it today is a product of people; all the data, photos, games were created by people, for people, and about people. There is a new internet emerging, the Internet of Things (IoT) which will allow things to share their experiences with other things. This is done by embedding sophisticated chips and sensors into the physical things that surround us, giving them the ability to sense, control, and communicate. The IoT station is locate...d at the Learning Factory in ETB and consists of 8 modules that transmit and receive data from/to a web server. This is one of the main advantages of IoT as the information is accessible from anywhere in the world. The backbone of any IoT system is a message broker. The IoT station implements the MQTT protocol to relay data to and from IOT boards, and monitor the data coming in and out of the broker by subscribing to the topic of interest. The Airplane Module The Airplane module is a simulation of IoT flight control. The airplane is fitted with a gyroscope and accelerometer that transmit data to our web server, making the data accessible from anywhere in the world. In automatic mode, the airplane module does not need any human intervention- we have implemented a PID loop to stabilize the aircraft by itself- this is known as machine to machine communication. The human is only required when changing states of the aircraft from manual to automatic mode. Using an android app, it transmits a signal to the topic of the web server which the program reads for. In manual mode, the airplane can be controlled from anywhere in the world. The Stamper Module The Stamper module replicates a stamping machine that is controlled and monitored through the IoT. An operator uses an android app to send control specifications to our web server under a different topic than the airplane topic. After reading the data from the topic, the stamper adjusts the speeds of the motors and stamping frequency to match the operator's specifications. In addition, it relays back information on the motors power consumption, stamping count and errors. This is what Industry 4.0 will look like, where you can monitor a factory’s every little detail and control machinery through a centralized system. These are the type of projects you will have the opportunity to work on at ARVI!

Hi everyone, Just a quick heads up: there is an event this coming Monday at JHE H324 at 11:00 am. that we recommend you attend. It relates to a new graduate program focused around AI/ML/AR/VR. Everyone is welcome to attend and learn what the program is all about, as well as ask any questions they have on their mind related to the program.
