The City of Victoria has set a deadline of March 31st, 2021 to ensure that everyone currently sheltering in parks is offered an indoor space so that 24/7 sheltering in parks can come to an end. There are many solutions underway to create shelter for 200 people. One of those solutions is Hey Neighbour: Making Room, our proposed tiny home community for 30 people currently living outside, unhoused. Working in partnership with the Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness (G...VCEH), and other community partners, we are proposing these 30 housing units be built using repurposed shipping containers, which will be designed to include a bed, desk, hot plate, fridge, shared shower and washroom facilities and the potential for a shared outdoor kitchen facility. In less than a month, we as a community have crowdfunded enough donations to build 15 of the 30 shipping container homes. With generous contributions from the citizens of Victoria and volunteer services donated from numerous businesses throughout the city, we are taking the next steps on this transitional housing tiny home project. On January 14th, 2021, Mayor Helps will bring a report to Council recommending that 940 Caledonia Avenue, the Royal Athletic Park Parking lot, be used as the site for this transitional tiny home community from March 2021 to September 2022, at the latest.
