Last night, a family visiting our community suffered a terrible tragedy in the water just as the sun was setting. Like many others before them, a sunset swim at Sauble Beach is one of the most peaceful things. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. White water rafting and kayaking, gymnastics, mountain biking and bmx, rock and ice climbing, as well as backpacking and snowshoeing expeditions. Riley is also a ski instructor and his favourite sport ever is freestyle skiing After school Riley wants to travel, taking on different guiding adventure jobs around the world. Yesterday we had the pleasure of welcoming Ontario’s Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries Minister Lisa MacLeod to Ascent, while she visited Sauble Beach and announced $400K for local relevant industries. Alongside Associate Minister of Energy MPP Bill Walker, Mayor Janice Jackson and Deputy Mayor Jay Kirkland, Minister MacLeod tried out our Zip Coaster and a bit of Axe Throwing! Thank you for your time and for working to help businesses in these industries begin t...o recover from the economic fallout covid-19 has caused. The tourism industry has faced unprecedented challenges in these past months. This means the 1.8 million Canadians who are employed by the tourism sector have dealt with job insecurity like never before, including reduced hours and a huge number of lay offs - not to mention the many businesses that have been forced to close permanently. Of that 1.8 million, 31% are youth aged 15-25. Being able to open Ascent this summer meant providing part- and full-time employment to 25 students who rely on summer income to help them reach their goals and prepare for the future. We are very grateful for that. The availability of outdoor recreation options is also incredibly consequential for people’s mental health and wellbeing - especially during times of stress and uncertainty. We are immensely thankful to all the guests who have chosen to #climbsauble so far this season and know the next few weeks will be bittersweet as we wrap up summer 2020.
