Ascent New Brunswick 06.11.2020

Wow, what a good time that was! This year's Rendezvous was by all accounts a huge success. We kicked it off on Friday evening as a bunch of folks rolled in quickly, set up their tents and then bee lined it for the cliff. Apparently there was a group that went up after dark for a very balmy multi pitch. Climbing in t-shirts at midnight in late September.......nice! Saturday started off with good attendance for the AGM. Lots of good news was shared, a couple of motions were pas...sed and then the elections were held with Phil Labbe being the only change to the executive filling the vacated position of Secretary. The meeting adjourned and the main events began: climbing, comps and clinics! Wow, was Cochrane Lane busy. There were actually line ups on some routes. It was fantastic to see so many people out enjoying our cliffs under beautiful sunny skies. Everyone started heading back to the pit around 5 pm to enjoy a buffet and corn boil. Thanks to Ian Lingley and the Pumpkin Patch for donating the corn. Results from the comps were tabulated and the winners were announced: Dom Caron and Luc Gallant won the Sunnyside Throwdown. Josh Davies and Dan Trojand won the Cochrane Lane Classics. The best costume award went to Marty Levesque and Chris Baker. We handed out a ton of prizes and then hung out out at the campfire. Cory Richardson presented a couple of very cool slide shows including one from the day's activities. Sunday was another day of climbing and work on our trails supported by the UNB Rock and Ice Club with some strong leadership from Michel Martin and Luc Gallant to improve a couple of key areas that were in need of attention. The trail going from Cheekbone Corner all the way up to the top of Pooh Corner and the Amphitheater approach trail are both looking way better now. The goals were to remove hazards from these areas, make them safer and easier to get through. I do believe those goals were accomplished. Thanks to the great people we had working on these trails: Kathleen Trafton, Emma Matchett, Carlie Dunbar, Eric Sloan, Sophia Konermann, Mario Tran, Michaela Harris, Quentin Stoyel, Luc Gallant and Michel Martin. Thanks to everyone who came out and took part in the weekend. We have an amazing community of climbers including a large number of folks who travelled all the way from Nova Scotia and PEI. Our doors are always open to our fantastic neighbors. Please keep coming back. Many people approached me over the weekend with very positive comments about how welcoming, friendly and inclusive our community is. In the end I think that is the most important aspect of the Rendezvous. It builds our community and provides opportunities for people to connect while enjoying our fabulous climbing areas. I'm already looking forward to the next one. See more

Good news! The weekend weather forecast looks awesome. We are a go for the Rendezvous. Here are a few important notes: All scheduled events are going ahead as originally planned and scheduled. If you are camping there is a great area for tents surrounding the huge pine tree close to Cochrane Lane. We are having Trail Day on Sunday and looking for volunteers. Our plan is to make trail improvements between Gollum's Cave and Waterfall Wall and possibly on the main trail below Minke Wall. Do not feel obligated to help. If you would rather just go climbing please do.
