I love playing with layouts to showcase potential and moving furniture is my fave pastime. For reals, just ask my closest friend about all the times I’d convince her to rearrange her bedroom with me ‘for fun!’ since grade 6. My husband will also corroborate this addiction. So when I was brought in to help showcase this spacious home for a lovely couple last week in Cambridge, I jumped at the opportunity to move some furniture around (and bring in my own!) This living/family ...room is big, has one empty wall and backs onto the kitchen. Everyone assumes to put a couch against a wall, but in this layout, floating a couch and using a carpet to help define the space instantly created a cozy, inviting area that still had a large open feel, and showcased the best layout for a television. Lastly, you might be inclined to do a sectional in such a large room - don’t. It severely limits your layout options and in this case would either block that beautiful window or would cutoff a main flow and sight line to the room. #tipoftheday I wish these owners all the success on their new adventure! #tipoftheday Ok - so the bed is the focal point in the bedroom ... obviously, right... and when you walk in a bedroom it should be opposite the door and on the longest wall. But what do you do if the windows are on that wall? If you can, Use them to your advantage! Make the focal point shine - frame the bed with tall luxurious curtains and use bedside tables or dressers that really fill the space. Presto! You’ve got yourself a full feature wall that creates height, frames ...the bed, adds soft texture and supports symmetry. You can go check out this ah-mazing, huge, sun-filled space of this primary bedroom with @hamiltonrealestate and see for yourself how a bed in front of the window really can work! But hurry! Turned an old set of lamps (thx mom!) and a neighbour’s old pot lid to create a DIY salvaged bird bath. Needs a little silicone to seal the hole, but not too bad for #free! Remember 5 months ago when I posted get ready for this reveal. Ya. Hope you weren’t holding your breath. . About right after this mini temporary glow up was completed in our kids bathroom, I spontaneously had four design consults in one week. That was back in January and it hasn’t stopped. I’m so grateful for all the opportunities to meet new people, learn their design dilemmas and help them solve their problems, on any budget! It was a busy and unexpected turn in 2021 a...nd it gave me renewed energy, hope and confidence to keep pursuing this passion of mine. For everyone that Ive worked with or am about to work with - thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you ! Back to the bathroom! I had so much fun making our kids bathroom a little more colourful and functional until we get to the point where we need/can afford/have time to do a full Reno. I cannot wait for that day. But until then, I could not deal with the ugly boringness of this dated bathroom that I’m probably in more than mine (read: lots of bath time / teeth brushing / potty training supervision!) I was on a tight budget for this one and the only product we bought new was the faucet - it was a necessity. This was mostly about paint and craftiness! You can relive the full play by play in my stories highlight including how I made a mirror out of a placemat! In total I estimate this glow up was done for less than $100! (#DYK you can get a black faucet from IKEA for $19!!) What makes a space interesting? Simply put: the unexpected! Exhibit A - This is a mood board I put together for a new clients’ powder room. It’s not like there’s a lot of hmm, what do you need in a powder room; it’s kinda already figured out for ya. So after you figure out the technical deets (layout, scale, limitations, etc), focus on how you can make the necessities not so... boring?!... Here are some ideas to inject some interest in otherwise pretty basic room requirements: 1. Subway tile, but different! Play around with layouts, sizes, colours and finishes. We went with a basic subway tile in keeping with other areas of the home, but adopted a vertical stacked and staggered layout instead of... well, instead of what you would expect! 2. Mix styles! Granted this style mix (modern x farmhouse) is so popular it’s become its own style, but you get what I mean - adding the barn board shelving mixes it up and adds another texture and warm wood to the room. 3. When deciding lighting in a bathroom, if possible, I’ll first and foremost always try for two sconces, at eye level. In this case, there wasn’t a lot of room for wall sconces, but, I still prioritized even lighting at eye level by doing simple pendant style lights coming down from the ceiling. (Bonus, with an exposed bulb you can get creative with styles - it DOES NOT have to be an Edison bulb! And in this case, shouldn’t be; they do not give off enough light. As much as they look nice, I have a love/hate for them. Who’s with me?) Keep these tips in mind when planning your next Reno!
