Sometimes a person must muster all of their courage to simply sit still. How much of humanity has been spoiled for the confusion of movement with progress? I’m paraphrasing. I read this quote in a book (A Dirty Job) by Christopher Moore and it stood out to me. What this quote emphasizes is how common it is to confuse being busy and productive with making progress on our goals and living a fulfilling life to the point that it is courageous and bold to slow down and stop.... #growthmindset #selfimprovements #counselling #stressrelief #mentalhealth #selfcare #therapy #anxiety #mentalhealthawareness #anxietyrelief #stress #depression #anxietyrecovery #anxietyhelp #psychology #mentalhealthmatters #wellness #stressmanagement #counselling #vancouvercounsellor #vancouverigers #counsellors #anxietymanagement #anxietytips #stillness #mentalhealthsupport #mentalwellness #meditation #mindfulliving #mindfulness

Choose the thought that helps you feel better. Have you ever had a negative thought you couldn’t get out of your mind? Imagine the happiest moment in your life that first comes to mind. See how that made you feel? Practice replacing your thoughts to create this same effect.... A simple trick for working with a negative thought is to examine the chain reaction that it’s a part of. 1. Identify your thought, e.g., the world isn’t fair 2. Identify your feeling linked to the thought, e.g., I feel hopeless 3. Identify the action you take with this thought, e.g., I don’t apply for that job Next, identify the positive feeling you would prefer to have. Then create a new thought that would lead to this feeling, instead of the existing thought you have. If you don’t believe this thought yet, that’s OK. Repeat this new thought to yourself every time the old thought comes up to practice extinguishing it. Have you ever turned your mood around by thinking happy thoughts?

Boundaries is a bit of a buzzword. A personal boundary is like a physical boundary- where you end and another person begins. When people have rigid boundaries, they have difficulty with letting other people get close emotionally, often out of fear of rejection or getting hurt. On the other hand, porous boundaries leads to emotional and measurement, over sharing and often times, inadvertently getting hurt.... Healthy boundaries acknowledge each person‘s individual responsibility and maintains integrity and self respect. A relationship with healthy boundaries is not dependent or emotional you distanced. Setting boundaries doesn’t always feel good in the short term, but the long-term results are invariably positive. #growthmindset #selfimprovements #counselling #stressrelief #mentalhealth #selfcare #therapy #anxiety #mentalhealthawareness #anxietyrelief #stress #depression #anxietyrecovery #anxietyhelp #psychology #mentalhealthmatters #mindfulness #wellness #stressmanagement #counselling #vancouvercounsellor #vancouverigers #counsellors #anxietymanagement #anxietytips #anxietydisorders #anxietysucks #mentalhealthsupport #mentalwellness #values

I’m not really a green thumb. Let me tell you something about beliefs. What we tell ourselves about ourselves can either limit or encourage expansion and growth. For a long time, I believed I wasn’t good at taking care of plans. So what did I do about it? I never bought plants, I can tell you that. ... Then, one day, I moved into a house that had a garden. The fig, apple and plum trees produced fruit so effortlessly. It looked easy! So I decided to try gardening. Was it easy? Heck no. The first year, I had a delicious crop of carrots that were tastier than anything store-bought. I planted all sorts of seeds haphazardly, and I ate about 50% of my crop (if I’m being really generous.) I decided to plan my garden the next year, and I moved the carrots to another location. My carrot crop was awful. On the other hand, I had pumpkins growing 6 feet out of the garden and over the fence, and my tomatillos were so abundant that the plants fell over. (I didn’t end up eating the pumpkins or tomatillos. I felt too overwhelmed!) The next year, I planted carrots back in the original spot and the crop flourished again. This year, I decided to grow an avocado tree from a pit. I felt certain I would fail because I tried it earlier this year and completely botched it. This time, I did a little bit of research and messaged with someone online who looked to be a good propagator of avocado pits. The result is the plant you see in the picture. My avocado seed is now 12 inches high above ground, and has a root structure several inches down in the dirt. YAY! So what’s my point? I thought I didn’t have a green thumb, and I made decisions that proved myself right. Once I started to make decisions that challenged this belief, I proved myself wrong. Take risks and do what you think you can’t do. You might end up exactly where you want to be. #beliefs #selfimprovements #counselling #stressrelief #mentalhealth #selfcare #therapy #anxiety #mentalhealthawareness #anxietyrelief #stress #depression #anxietyrecovery #anxietyhelp #psychology #mentalhealthmatters #mindfulness #wellness #stressmanagement #counselling #vancouvercounsellor #vancouverigers #counsellors #anxietymanagement #anxietytips #anxietydisorders #anxietysucks #mentalhealthsupport #mentalwellness #selfcaresundays

How do you overcome anxiety? Some of the most helpful antianxiety strategies are breathing, moving, distracting and thinking. Breathe - Breathing in and out slowly stimulates the vagus nerve. This nerve at the base of the brain is connected to the heart, and will help reduce your heart rate to calm down.... Move - The body can anticipate a response of movement (fight/flight) with the burst of energy when youre experiencing anxiety. Going for a walk or doing some exercise, even jumping jacks or running up and down stairs can help reset your body during anxiety. Spending time in nature can reduce anxiety by decreasing cortisol. Mindful walking can decrease anxiety by allowing you to focus on your steps rather than your anxiety. Distract - Give your mind something else to focus on to allow your body to naturally calm while the chemicals of anxiety dissipate in your body. Try a crossword, sudoku, a puzzle or some engaging task that allows you to use all of your mental energy. Think - Challenging irrational thoughts can help reduce anxiety. For example, if youre jumping to conclusions, ask yourself how likely the worst case scenario is to happen and if it were to happen, how you would respond. This type of thinking can help you figure out rational thoughts from the noise of anxiety. How do you fight anxiety? Are you someone who is able to improvise easily? This may sound like a wild idea, but sometimes improv can be a cure to overthinking. Hear me out. In a technique called Socratic questioning, you ask yourself questions about your thought to place it back in reality and decrease the perceived dangerousness of the outcome. Did you know that Iron Man experienced high anxiety? Thats right, in the Marvel series Iron Man, our hero Tony Stark suffered from panic attacks. Tony Stark called them anxiety attacks (but he wasnt a clinician). This helped to connect to viewers as a more relatable character because anxiety is a surprisingly common experience. Anxiety disorders are among the most common types of mental disorders in Canada. ... So what is anxiety? Anxiety is a completely normal response to perceived threat of harm. Biologically, it is the bodys way of springing to action, called fight-or-flight (and sometimes freeze). This mode keeps you safe in potentially dangerous situations. With disordered anxiety, you may suddenly feel your fight-or-flight response activate in an otherwise normal and safe situation. This can be super alarming, because youll notice different sensations like your heart rate increase or your mind think faster, but there isnt any threat you can detect in your environment. Did you know that brain chemicals can significantly alter your mood, for better or worse? The neurotransmitter called GABA is a messenger for chemicals in your brain. GABA is responsible for preventing certain brain signals and can also block brain signals. GABA helps to decrease activity in your nervous system so that your body can feel calm. An interesting part about gather is that it is affected by alcohol. Alcohol is an indirect GABA antagonist, meaning that when you h...ave ingested alcohol, your body has greater difficulty creating gather. This is partly why you might feel more anxious or depressed after drinking alcohol. GABA production is helped by eating fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, pickles, regular kefir and coconut water kefir. According to wellnesscity.com, Vitamin B-6 is required to synthesize GABA, so foods rich in B6, like spinach, garlic, broccoli, brussels sprouts and bananas help with GABA, too! Have you ever felt better after a good sleep? Sleep has a significant impact on health and well-being. Theres a close connection between sleep and mood, as poor sleep or insufficient sleep can result in feeling irritable and stressed. Likewise, feeling irritable and stressed at bedtime can result in poor sleep quality. Sleep is essential for your brains functioning and affects attention, learning, memory consolidation and even emotion regulation. The brain chemical cal...led GABA helps you to sleep soundly and low levels of this chemical have been linked to anxiety, depression, insomnia, chronic stress, muscle pain and even headaches according to thesleepdoctor.com. To ensure a more comfortable sleep, avoid blue light 60 to 90 minutes before bed and have a routine at the end of your day that helps you wind down. Some people choose to listen to meditation, write in a journal or read quietly before drifting off to sleep. What does it mean for me to take a holistic approach to mental health as a counsellor? In addition to helping to establish your therapy goals from the concerns that bring you to counselling, I also provide a holistic assessment. This includes assessing mood and various areas in your life, like diet, appetite, sleep, and other lifestyle factors including caffeine, tobacco, prescription and recreational drugs, and your social and emotional support systems. To boost the effe...ctiveness of counselling, you may be referred to your physician, a naturopathic doctor or other paramedical professional(s), such as massage therapist or chiropractor to rule out and address underlying causes of your experience. You may also be referred to a psychologist or another counsellor to help with areas of your mental well-being. In the clarifying/exploring stage, we dive deeper into the psychological roots of your experience. We might explore culture, values, your belief system, and life dreams, as well as your evaluation of your progress. Change experiments can include cognitive behavioural techniques and testing new core beliefs. This is where I like to say the rubber meets the road in counselling, because the majority of the work in therapy happens between appointments, when you self-reflect, gain information and generate insights from changing your habits, routine, and way of thinking. The reintegration phase is when you have met your initial counselling goals and can transition to therapy on a maintenance frequency. You might also choose a new goal, or pause therapy until you feel a need to return again. I believe that a holistic approach to mental health provides the most comprehensive overview of your life and can lead to more satisfactory outcomes in counselling. Next up in the alphabet of mental health vitamins includes vitamin D Vitamin D is a vitamin that we get from the sun, and has been linked to depression. This might come as no surprise in the west coast of BC, where folks might experience decreased mood during the darker autumn and winter months. Vitamin D helps to keep bones healthy by facilitating the absorption of calcium and also helps to boost the immune system. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased risk ...of depression, and low levels of vitamin D might contribute to poor mood regulation due to impaired cognitive function and brain health. Here are sources of vitamin D: cooked egg yolk, fish such as tuna, mackerel and trout, dairy such as margarine, milk and yogurt, nuts and legumes such as almond butter, black beans, chickpeas and tahini, soy foods and beverages including soy milk and tofu, vegetables and fruit including broccoli, Chinese cabbage and bok choy, kale, oranges, dried fish and seaweed. How does sunshine provide vitamin D? When your skin is exposed to UVB rays from sunlight, it creates vitamin D from cholesterol.
