How much will this hurt? I got to the end of my practice and found utpluthi Still waiting for me. I have been lifting my knees for months, taking a friendly option. Today I hit the wall and decided it was time for change. The risk of not lifting is falling 3 and an achy shoulder for a day, nothing I wasn’t ready to risk, but I was still fidgety about it.... Ashtangis you know what I mean You know the feeling when you get to your knees for kapo and adjust your hair, reach up and back for 7 breaths, wiggle your knees around etc? That’s what I was feeling. Uncomfortable being uncomfortable. Today my goal was 10% of my previous average number - 5 breaths. It doesn’t seem like a lot but it is a realistic goal for where I am. 5 felt good so I did it again. And again! And one more time just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke! I didn’t think I could do 1 breath and I did 20. So what does that tell me? That I might be underestimating myself I’m stronger than I think I’m not broken Caution is self-preserving but doubt ruins all the fun. Next time doubt tries to cast a shadow on your goals you might just flick them into your fireplace and give it a go. Practice with me! Maybe it’s my 40’s maybe it’s the yoga? Lately I have come to appreciate how yoga practice enriches my life. The views are more beautiful, the moments more precious, the air just a little fresher. I’m not sure if it’s because my senses are tuned after yoga or if my eyes are more conditioned to look for and appreciate beauty. I have so far to go, look how far I have come Two months ago I couldn’t make it down the stairs in my house - so I walked to my kid’s rooms and back. Then to the garden 2 blocks away. Then to see the river. Adding a little bit every few days to challenge without overwhelm. Yesterday I made it to the top of my favourite hill and was rewarded for my diligence with this beautiful view. I literally had to turn around and look back - giving myself an opportunity to appreciate just... how far I have come. 8 weeks Post-Op: This is downward dog Smiling ear to ear! The healing arm is *nearing* overhead and I’m even placing a small amount of weight on my hand. My feet are working, my legs are working and my core was really firing (half from effort and half from fear of falling!) Even if this looks more like a baby dog than a downward dog, this is great progress for me If you have ever worked through a serious injury or rehab then you will know how much these stepping stones feel... for mental health. Led 2nd : Jazz hands crossed with a marathon Led 2nd can feel like flying a kite with just the right amount of wind and it can feel like pushing a boulder uphill. I aim for a consistent middle ground, enough effort to remain laser-focused but not so much that I have been hit my lightening and need 3 coconuts Primary series is grounding and deeply healing where Intermediate series is stimulating with many backbends and deep forward bends (think leg behind the head). I am a #pittababe who runs hot & wears tank tops in deep winter so this seasonal change is welcome. Do you like my glacier nap picture ? ... If you struggle with change consider a few shifts in your daily routine that support change and help you welcome it instead of bracing against it. Here are a few tips to keep your heat supported in the fall season: Drink warm water. Make big pots of tea to sip on during the day, fill your thermos and keep warm from the inside Cover your throat and chest with a scarf or shawl to keep the wind off Use a space heater for practice to build your sweat Get outside! Why bend over backwards? I learned deep backbending as a gymnast and rhythmic gymnast. Athleges move in a silky and slinky way while maintaining incredible control, so that knowledge is what I draw on to practice and teach backbending. A couple decades of yoga has helped too I suppose I’m out of the age where advanced posturing is interesting anymore and direct my energy to balance and nourishing mobility. However! If you are interested in deep bending here are a few point...ers - Find a teacher that you respect who supports healthy movement versus depth at all costs Pay attention to your shoulders when you reach Use your legs. Seriously. Work for even arcs, not segmented bending Pay attention to your edge and stop BEFORE that Backbending is stimulating to the nervous system and can bring deep healing to the spine and front body when done well. Today was a normal day There have been a lot of abnormal days in the last six months for a lot of reasons. This morning I woke up before 5am & practiced. The kids came down dressed and had breakfast. My husband woke up and came down looking fantastic. Bags got packed and we left the house without issue or meltdown. Traffic was easy. Pickup from school was simple. When I got home and went for a walk I was filled with an incredible sense of calm and realized today was a NORMAL ...day. No fires, no emergencies, no cat barf, nothing odd at all, and it felt absolutely GLORIOUS. I realized that I had been in a state of hyper-aware for a long time and today everything just came together with ease. Thank goodness for this! Rituals in Life It’s time. Time to hop back on the routine train. Choo! Choo! This week I set my alarm clock AND got up when it went off. The laundry is done and the fridge is full. Now that these errands are done its time to set a schedule to keep the family wheel turning and support a sense of calm.... Here are a few tips to get you going Find a calendar or spread sheet and sketch out September Start with your non-negotiable commitments. Work, yoga practice, meal time, sleep windows, grocery runs Book your yoga practice and workouts. I just said that but regular practice is vital to experiencing the deep benefits of yoga (and fitness) Be a time realist not a time optimist ie. Pad the schedule for drive time & prep time Plan ahead - weekly meal plan, lunches made at night, clothes and workout gear laid out. Print out your schedule and post it where you see it Book your down time and self-care. Twice a week I book an hour slot, close the door and open it only for broken bones and uncontrolled bleeding. I need the time to be alone and take care of myself & never ask or make excuses Book creative time. With an active family I book it and focus on my creation projects for that time. With a little practice, the mind gets on board These moments are the sacred rituals of your life. Approach them with planning & mindfulness to support a sense of calm and preparedness. How you spend your days and weeks are how you live your life. A little support from a schedule might just help you map out the life you really want to live, so go for it. Cultivate effort without focusing on the fruits abhyasa vairagyabhyam tan nirodha - Yoga Sutra 1.12 Balancing practice and detachment is a form of self-mastery.... In yogic philosophy there is a two-step method for how to stop the fluctuations of the mind and arrive in yoga. Through practice (abhyasa) and non-attachment (vairagya) we can stop identifying with our thoughts and be able to see the true reality. At this point we have arrived at enlightenment and oneness. So what does that really mean for me, a householder with a hundred things to do by sunrise? I think it means that we should guide our attention to the present moment instead of on what happens as a result of the work. Practical example - I remind my children to practice gratitude so they learn to feel grateful and respectful for the amazing life/school/community they have versus teaching them gratitude so they say thank-you when handed a cookie. Harvest good intentions I love a list. Sometimes I even write something on a list simply for the satisfaction of checking it off. When September nears I look over my list of intentions and goals from the summer and put them to work with step by step plans. Eating Healthy can turn into - 3 colours of fruits and veggies at each meal. Sleeping More turns into a bedtime window of 8:30-9pm. Meditating Regularly turns into Sitting From 5-5:30am. These goals can all happen if I put ...time and energy into them and these goals will definitely not happen if I do nothing about it!
