Taking a moment to appreciate the artistry of musicians who died in 2020.
Jeffrey Morry, unflagging champion of the Izzy Asper Jazz Performances, puts his finger on the ache we're all feeling in the absence of live performances... Stay well, friends.
A big loss to the jazz world...
Dear Friends of Jazz It’s been a while since you’ve heard from the team at the Izzy Asper Jazz Performances. The last time I reached out, I thought I would be outlining clear plans in just a couple of weeks. We’re past that time frame now, and as this second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic takes hold, the plan I intended to share has changed dramatically.... In light of current government restrictions on travel and gatherings, the very real health risks to our patrons, and the financial implications of proceeding with dramatically reduced audiences, we have arrived at the very difficult decision to cancel the 2020-21 season of the Izzy Asper Jazz Performances. As you know, we had already suspended our planned fall concerts; now we have decided it is not viable to offer concerts in the winter or spring either. But do not despair! Though not yet confirmed, we are working hard to book an outdoor concert or two in the summer of 2021 where we may soak up world-class jazzLIVEwhile observing whatever social distancing may be required at that time. We want to offer these concerts free to you, our loyal subscribers, and to the community at large. So many of us are longing for the energy and joy that is part of the live music experience. We are hoping to lift the city’s spirits with a weekend or two of great outdoor jazz. Meantime, it’s up to all of us to proceed with care for one another and respect for the power of this virus. We wish each of you a healthy fall and winter, and may we all emerge into a safer environment in the spring! We will be in touch in a few months’ timeand we are full of expectations about the 2021-22 season of the Izzy Asper Jazz Performances. Thank you, as always, for your continued support. Together in music Charlene Diehl, Izzy Asper Jazz Performances Producer Tamar Barr, RJCC Assistant Executive Director Moe Levy and Jeffrey Morry, The Asper Foundation

As we all settle into following recommended health guidelines in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, those of us who plan and deliver cultural programming have had to make difficult decisions. As you will have predicted, we have cancelled our concerts with the Joe Locke Quartet, scheduled for May 2-3. We are currently finalizing our line-up for the 2020-21 season, and crossing our fingers that our community-wide commitment to staying home now will mean we will be able to gath...er comfortably and safely by the fall. Keep your eyes open for a full description of our featured artists later this month. The upcoming seasonour 22ndshowcases top-level artists across a wide range of styles, and we’re confident it pays tribute to Izzy Asper’s great joy in this art form. The Izzy Asper Jazz Performances team wishes you health, security, and the warmth of friendships in this difficult time, and may your spirits be lifted by wonderful music!
